I love the Olympics, sportsmanship etc, but wishing football could be as passionate as this is like attending a wedding reception and saying why can't dinner be like this every night. The Olympics are special because they come every 4 years, but football is played every week for 9 months of the year (with special events thrown in) so it's in our face all the time. Athletics and other sports are popular, but does not get the following or media coverage that football does. I'm sure I wouldn't want to share an evening with some footballers, but luckily I only watch them. Their wages are no concern of mine as long as clubs live within their means. I don't know how you can enjoy football, Godders, if it makes you so angry.
Fran Olympic football doesn't happen every week so I have every right to expect our footballers to be as passionate as any of the other athletes taking part. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for our footballers to win an Olympic medal and not one of them seemed as if they cared. That is what made me angry.
Excellent post Godders. Shame most seemed have missed the point of your thread. The selfishness that exudes throughout âprofessionalâ football (I use âprofessionalâ as descriptive term rather than the literal meaning) has corrupted football. Whist I still watch and support my beloved Saints â I do not have any respect for the current game. Whereas I can watch participants of other sports and I can respect their dedication and commitment to themselves, their fellow competitors and their chosen sport.
Because Footballers don't 'really' want an olympic medal. I'm sure they did care, but equally i's sure they'll get over not getting a medal a lot faster than Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter will get over not getting a gold.
If you read my original post I made no observation about class. My comments were about how people spend their time in honing and developing their skills. Many of the athletes said they spent six hours a day training whilst I meant to compare this to the footballers spending thier time having tatoos and stupid haicuts. Please read all of my comments on this thread and then tell me where I have made a reference to class.
Did you not see Sturridge after he had missed his penalty? Perhaps they were being professional and keeping their emotions to themselves. People want them to cry, but at the end of the day these players are paid to do what they do and being professional is a part of the game nowadays. It just sounds like you're jealous of the position they find themselves in where they have the opportunity to play against the best in the world.
You're full of it Godders. How you can watch a team being narrowly beaten by a superior side and then conclude they couldn't be bothered is a mystery to me and shows more about your prejudices than your sense of judgement.
Come on Godders, there is enough in there for me to make inferences. Plus you're on record in other threads talking about peoples upbringing and whether they are a 'nice boy' or not.
I'm more surprised he didn't manage to make a series of connections, with it ultimately being totally the fault of Portsmouth and it's denizens.
People think Guly does not try I didn't watch a full GB football match(so much drama & excitement elsewhere to dedicate 90 minutes) but from the bits I saw we kept the ball well and pressed hard and thought the lads put in plenty of effort. You have to pace yourself as a footballer as there is no finish line to collapse behind or weeks of recovery to follow.
Thing is not every Athlete is a angel and not every footballer is a complete nob. It doesn't matter if a person has a tattoo or a weird hair cut(weird to you maybe but obviously not to them). I agree some footballers just care about money but not all do. To simply generalise is being blinkered, the thing that annoyed me most about your post is when you yet again put people with tattoos down. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean everyone with them is some knuckle dragging moron. As for all athletes being better people, look at last night. A kenyan that ran in the 10,000m was on bail for stabbing someone and there are a hell of alot of other examples.(including drug cheats).
David Beckham has both silly hair and silly tattoos. He is also a model professional, passionate sportsman and a genuinely decent guy. Book, cover, etc. Also, Godders, you should note that his lack of intelligence doesn't make him an awful person.
Anyone else hoping we sell Danny Fox? I heard he never shows up to training because he spends so much time getting tattoos and he's a footballer, so obviously isn't passionate at all and is very selfish. Also, Danny is a nickname (as is Foxy) which makes him a massive ****er. Nothing on that Rickie Lambert though, he has tattoos and a very low level of education, what a waste of skin.
What kind of time do you think footballers spend getting their haircuts and tattoos done!? After they train in morning they have literally the whole day left to do various things. I imagine many footballers have gym equipment in their house which they use to keep fit but they have a lot of time to do other things. While some have a hair cut and get a tattoo done, some might watch T.V, go to the Cinema or have a kip. Are these unprofessional dispassionate sportsman too....and what a about that David Beckham, he spends so much time getting his haircut, getting tattoo done and staring in adverts that he is just a disgrace.
The thing is with footballers they reach their peak technical ability a lot earlier than athletes. Therefore when they reach 25/26 they mainly focus on teamwork and the physical side of their game, i.e theres not much point devoting all their time to see if they can beat their keepy uppy record, but with athletes they are always looking to improve in every aspect. That's why they spend a lot longer training.
Footballers have stupid haircuts, tattoos, fame and lots of money, as do lots of other athletes. For example Tom Daley is always the poster boy for something and frequently jets off around the world to meet his legions of adoring fans. It's remarkable that he manages to fit it around school and training. Footballers aren't the only sportsmen with unwanted baggage or personality defects. Athletes are just young men and women with a particular physical talent. Elite athletes make the effort to nurture that talent. When England got knocked out of the Euros or GB out of the Olympics, it wasn't for want of trying, they just weren't that good and got knocked out by better sides. To accuse them of not caring is grossly unfair. Whilst footballers have their faulsts, a lack of commitment is not one of them. By the way, which twat owns the sports car with the ghasty yellow brake calipers in the Chapel car park? Must be a player.
