I'm struggling about taking my grandson who is four. He says he wants a Tigers shirt - weirdly, he calls City the Tigers. I use both City and the Tigers interchangeably. Now I have a couple of problems:
1. Have you tried getting a replica kit that will fit a four year old and won't cost what an adult shirt will cost?
2. We live in Preston - the one with the North End. Do I want to set him up for a lifetime of being seen as ultra weird by getting him a City kit? Do I want him ostracising from his social circle? Should I just get him a Man U kit?

His mother keeps suggesting I should just take him. I keep saying it's a waste of money as I only get to the away games and he won't see anything. Having said that, at Blackburn and Preston he'd have seen the entire match easily.

I had a similar problem, my son grew up in Lincolnshire, same as myself at his age he wanted to go to matches with his peer group - most of his schoolmates supported either Grimsby (2 leagues above us at the time) or Scunny (who would beat us regularly), luckily his closest friends supported Nottingham Forest and that's who he supports to this day. I'd have loved to have taken him to BP but it wasn't to be.

Your situation? Preston has a perfectly good football team, one that hopefully his schoolmates will support and be hooked for life following. A Man Utd shirt? Perish the thought!

2. Are you mad? Am I really reading this? I never grew up in Hull but my Dad did and therefore I had City drummed into me from a young age, exactly the same scenario as my son nowadays, even though we're now not even in Yorkshire. There should only be two rules to decide which club you support: 1. Are they your nearest team? 2. Are they the team your old man supports?. In my eyes rule number 2 trumps rule number 1 hands down.

Other clubs have fans who take kids to away games. You see them stood on seats or on their parents shoulders. Maybe the offspring of Hull folk are more delicate? Other clubs have older fans who stand and get behind the team and who don't whinge and get fellow fans thrown out. Maybe some teams have more enthusiastic followers and deserve more success?

depends on the circumstances, in your case id agree but what if somebodies old man was a plastic scouser or Arsenal fan who has never been near the stadium, then junior takes over and then his junior and It creates a never ending line of them..

What if the father supports one team and the wife another. Should support by junior be given to both teams? Happened with me as a kid- not with football but rugby league.

that's why I personally think you should encourage them to support the hometown team if they are growing up there, I don't have kids but if I have one id love them to be a City supporter and I expect they will as I don't think id ever move, but if for some reason I had to move miles away like Plymouth before I had one and that's where they grew up , id like them to have an interest in City but wouldnt like them to support a team they could hardly ever see so id encourage them to go support Plymouth..
its a tough one tho!

Good point. Maybe the rule should be "you should support whichever team is the ****test"

He was born and raised round here. That's problem number 1. I've already inculcated him into City! He wants a City shirt. The Man U shirt was a joke.
Problem number 2 is that I'd have to take him to Deepdale. I'm quite happy for him to follow them but I wouldn't be happy to do the same. His mother, who also wasn't born in Hull, has been to the KC lots of times but only been to Deepdale twice - that's down to me again. It seems I am intent on destroying my family's lives!
