Every Christmas throughout the 1970s - before I was born, of course - every household in Britain had a packet of dates which remained unopened, next to the tin of Quality Street.

I only drink gluten free beer, not because I have any reaction to gluten, it is just so I can pay double the price and help kick start the economy again.

Hahaha that is a fair point. I was only kidding about the gluten free beer, but I was speaking to a guy yesterday and he mentioned the price of it.

Back when it was an actual tin too, none of this plastic nonsense. The tins always came in handy for keeping buttons, odd screws & nails or general bits and bobs in afterwards. Reproduce that now and the soldier would have to be a negro, the burd in the dress would be a pre-op tranny who identifies as female, the bloke who owned the stall would be a Pakistani, the coach driver would be Syrian and the kids would be morbidly obese.

Toffee Penny for this fat bastard.

The toffee penny was my favourite, but if I tried to eat one now I'd be pulling all me railings out.

I'm sure they are softer these days, when we was young, a toffee was a toffee.

These days they are caramels that identify as toffees.

What was the awful one, not sure in QS or Roses, that was chocolate covered shards of glass? I don't want to go down the "weren't Spangles great?!" route (they weren't by the way) but what on earth possessed confectioners to put out a chocolate that would shred the insides of your mouth?

The Mecca shut down about the same time as the Locarno and the Rainbow. The Hackney Empire, however, is still there. Sun never sets...
