Season 3 it's also very good and it links back to 1. Season 4 definitely has links as well from the trailer. We'll just pretend 2 didn't happen.

Watched season 1 of True Detective, loved it.
Watched season 2, hated it. The performances were good, particularly from Colin Farrell, but the story was all over the ****ing place.
Havent watched 3 but may give it a shot
 
just came across an intro for a series from the 80's...looks great. I'll have to try and find it on Amazon/Netflix
