To me it seems a bit off - Colombia do seem to have an inflated position - and I think this is true of quite a few north and south american teams. I don't claim to be an expert on either team, but I don't think USA or Chile should be so high for example. The problem comes in the fact that England have not played any highly ranked sides recently so have not been able to gain points this way. A win and a draw against Brazil were both excellent results, but meant for very little as Brazil were so lowly ranked at the time - and this exposes quite a fundamental flaw in the system which in my opinion inhibits it being a very objective measure.
Here is transcript of press conference with Roy Hodgson: Journo: Roy, what are your thoughts on England's world ranking dropping to 17th? Roy Hodson: Well naturally I'm very disappointed with our ranking. I had hoped if anything to improve our ranking. I think a lot about ranking, it is important to me. I want to have a good rank... why are you laughing?
As I said, I don't really think that England are that low. How many teams are there in the world that you feel would definitely beat us at Wembley. Actually not that many...England can beat anyone or at least draw on their day. I would reckon that England should reach last 8 of tournaments. don't take that to mean that I am happy with England....far from it. But rankings are too dependant on who you have played recently.
