He will go down as the greatest ever. Its not a debate. Thats how it is.

He also won 2 CL titles in 15/16 years not 26. We couldnt play in europe for the first part of his reign. Had Barcelona ( the greatest side of all time ) not been the greatest side of all time he would have 5 CL titles to his name and 3 of them in the last 5 seasons. The only reason he doesnt have 5 is the greatest team ever beat us in the final twice. Any other side would of lost to United as we were the second best side around, the best of the rest and by some way.

Winning a cup is quite easy when you have the liuxury of not bothering about tyhe league, cups or anything but Europe. Like Rafa for example or Ancelotti or many managers of Real Madrid, italian clubs. All that focus on just one trophy....... Fergie wants all of them, every season. The league obviously comes first, its the most important of them all.... you cant be the best in europe if your not the best domestically after all, you would just get laughed at for suggesting it. So by going for every major trophy every season its a case of cant win them all. He won most of the PL titles, more than everyone else combined and has 2 CL titles, a feat not so many have accomplished ( CL or EC ) plus a bag full of pother trophies.

    Rubbish though <ok>

Yes, while finishing sixth in the league.

Shame such an obvious point sailed straight over your simple head.

  6. I'd take finishing 17th and winning CL over finish between second and fourth with no silverware. Both get you the same competitions for the following season but one involves lifting a major trophy!

PS...not read the whole thread so I may have missed the point <ok>

    I'm with Gerez.

To me finishing 17th is no different to finishing 2nd, never mind 6th if you take out the financial incentives, but I'm a fan and I look at the game as a sport first and foremost. As Mourinho said finishing 2nd is the first loser.

There is no genuine football fan that would trade our 2011/12 season for anybody's (apart from possibly City). It would be every fans dream to go to Germany (Munich of all places) to see their team win in penalties and every fans dream to win the FA Cup.

I wouldn't expect a Man U fan to understand what I've said as you aren't genuine football fans but that's how I and most others would feel anyway.

  9. For me, I'd take the 2004-05 season (CL win and fifth, Everton fourth) ahead of 2008-09 season (second place with most prem points total for non-winners (then) and only two losses).

Alternatively, I'd prefer last season for us (8th but League Cup winners) over The Spuds (4th and no trophy). Both ended up with Europa League this season as a result.

Ok, so you don't bother even trying for the league so you can win a knock out comp and declare yourselves the best in europe?

Yeah, that's what 'genuine' football fans want.

Genuine football fans want to win, as do players. Nobody is going to tell their grandkids about that glorious 4th place finish.

Chelsea fans think they give Di Matteo a standing ovation in the 16th minute every game, when in fact they give him a standing ovation in the 17th minute.

This is the sort of intelligence we are working with here guys, they can't even count properly, so how can you expect them to understand SAFs outstanding achievements:biggrin:

Thing is, we were not in a position to win the title in our FA cup - CL double, so why people are complaining about us not concentrating on the league is beyond me. We're still the most successful team of the last decade.

Staggering, you clearly know **** all at all about the game.

So, finishing second on goal difference to the super mega greatest team ever Manchester City is choking. And all while we are **** remember.

That same fantastic best team ever to grace the premier league, ever, is currently seven points in the wake of that very same **** team. **** knows how far the ****ing gash you support behind us are, this after crashing out at the first hurdle of your Cl defence, great side that you are.

But, let's not get side tracked by that. Let's go back to the point; Fergie isn't a great manager because he hasn't conquered europe enough.
Never mind having every one of the so called domestic rivals in his pocket for 25 years, no that's not good enough, he also has to win as many CL's to be considered any good in your eyes.

How many CL's did your great Mourinho win as Chelsea manager? Remind me. **** all.
That's because his side were competing to win the league and could not do both.

How many league titles did Benitez win? **** all. That's because he wasn't good enough, so gave up and targeted a knock out comp because that's all he is capable of.

When Ferguson's side won the CL they also won the league and they also won the league while reaching two finals.

Your former and current manager are/were not capable of pulling this off.

    Bellend.

You're talking about other people missing the point yet, you seem to be the only one missing it. Nobody said we don't bother trying for the league. We said we would prefer to finish lower in the table if it meant winning a trophy. I don't think anyone has said they would take any trophy over the League (in fact District even said that swapping BOTH the Champions League and FA Cup for the Premier League was up for debate). Last season we were going for both the FA Cup, Champions League and a top four finish. Just because we failed with the latter, doesn't mean we weren't bothered. Beating Bayern Munich in Bayern Munich in the CL final was hardly a safety net we could fall back on.

Yes, you choked. You were 8 points clear with 6 games to go and in the front seat. People were already seeing the title as being over and bookies were paying out (there's a hilarious video on Youtube with a Trafford fan convinced the title was over and paying out very early). You choked just as we at the time thought City had choked after losing a 5 point lead they held for four months. Just as Newcastle choked after losing their 12 point lead with 13 games to go. Yours was perhaps the biggest bottle job of all.
