Expressing Christmas as Xmas is actually very old...not a new innovation at all. X is a symbol representing Christ.

Yup. I believe the X is actually the Greek "X" or Chi, first letter of "Christ" in Greek.

So, using "Xmas" for "Christmas" is a nicely classical reference.

Still all a big fairy story, of course.

Christians don't like the term "xmas", something about taking Christ out of Christmas.

Can't speak for all Christians but coming from a Catholic family, I know that my Italian grandparents wouldn't have liked people referring to Xmas, rather than Christmas. They passed that sentiment onto my dad, who certainly let me and the family know. I have tried to make sure such petty details don't bother me, but I know at least one of my older brothers will still disapprove if one says or writes Xmas.
