My Grandad used to have a splendid decanter in his front room. One of those crystal ones with a spherical bung in the top. Always had some sort of single malt in it. The other, smaller ones had sherry in.
In a previous life, I was a TV repair man (about 1980) and we used to dread getting called out to a Dynatron. Even with two of us, it was a nightmare getting the thing in the back of the van...
Hellfire! Forgot all about Crown Court - spot on though. I remember there'd often be an afternoon matinee of a film from the 30s/40/50s. Think it was OLM who also mentioned Pipkins - that hare used to terrify.
Reading the matchday programme as a kid and the player vox pops would always say something like: Favourite Food: Steak Favourite Music: Phil Collins.
Sat on a trolley bus whilst the driver, or conductor, can't remember which, struggled to get the connecting rod, which had come adrift, back onto the overhead cable with a long pole that was stored underneath the bus.
My uncle, who was very well off, got a Dynatron in a cabinet when colour TV first came out. It cost a fortune, best part of £400 I think. To put that in context that a new Mini car was only about £600. Hardly anything in colour was on and the picture was absolutely awful. In the 1970s one of those caused a furore in Hull. Front page of the HDM. A bloke went into Comet with A social security cheque and wanted to buy a Dynatron TV with it. The assistant wouldn't accept it. The bloke went back to social security who informed Comet that the money had been issued to help him refurbish his new accommodation as he had been evicted from the previous one and as the TV had doors on it counted as furniture.
They really weren't very good TV's (despite being part of Phillips), you were pretty much just paying for the cabinet. My mum and dad had one for years, but my mum never let anyone put it on, she said it spoiled the look with the doors open.
When we got our first colour telly one of my dad's mates brought it round about 9 at night. Sure enough a week later the police came round and took it away, didn't see my dad's mate for a year or so after that...
I've got me grandads old decanter on my sideboard in our front room. Think he used to keep brandy in it. I just put gin in it.
