Republic of Ireland qualify for the finals and yet all the papers are full of England's 'fantastic'?? performance in a friendly last night.

Its so infuriating that even though these are national papers and there's Irish folk living all over the country they seem to focus on England and to hell with the other nations.

Now i'm not ant English, its great to see a home nation doing well but the biased coverage week in week out just riles me.

Thoughts?

what do you expect, they're english papers at the end of the day, what next, front page coverage of the indian cricket team because of the number of indians here <laugh>

They won't mention Pakistan's cricket team because they got no balls.

the population of england is 50 odd million, ireland around 4.5m wales 3 and scotland probably somewhere between the 2. the telegraph does cover the home nations but obviously because there is far more interest in the english game they will always be the leading stories and rightly so because 80% or so of the readers will be english and therefore have less interest in other nations.

ireland qualifying is a big achievement, however ireland isnt even in the UK, and if you want a paper concentrating on irish matters get a paper in ireland.

also, how are english papers biased? they report upon what the readers are interested in!

Just over 21% of the population of the UK live in N Ireland, Scotland and Wales, a quick (unscientific) straw poll shows 85%+ of the media output in the UK is English orientated...............do you honestly think there is not a media bias towards England...............it has been going on for years, especially in sport:

1967.......Glasgow Celtic, the first BRITISH team to win the European Cup

1968.......Man Utd were they reported as emulating Celtic's achievement .i.e. the second British team to win the European Cup? No they were reported as the first ENGLISH team to win the European Cup...........please don't tell me the media are not bias in favour of England.

and you're saying the welsh papers (the only one i read is the western mail on saturday) arent biased towards wales?

the only papers i read are the telegraph, which i feel gives objective coverage towards english football, and sometimes the daily express and western mail as i said before. i cant speak of crap like the sun because i dont buy it, but i wouldnt be surprised if they do print biased rubbish about football.

European Cup, 29 May 1968

United became the first English team to win the European Cup, as Matt Busby's boys swept aside the Portuguese champions, Eusebio and all, on a glorious night at Wembley.

i just did a quick google search and found this and it says:

Celtic's historic victory in Europe should never be understated, and can certainly never be taken from them; not only were they the first British side to win the trophy, but the achievement of both reaching the final and winning the European Cup with a team comprised entirely of home-grown, local players (they were all born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park), has never been repeated in European football.

Even Matt Busby's Manchester United, who became the second British club to win the trophy the following year, included players from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland – and more importantly, Celtic won the trophy at their first attempt.

i know its not a newspaper but i think people are reading too much into things here, especially you aber <ok>

the irish version if the nationals will report the R of I match as priority so what is the problem....<ok>

Agree with the above, why would we expect a whole spread on Eire's exploits, after all they are a foreign country and nothing to do with the UK, all their nation ever does is come over here looking for jobs and having a tremendous bitterness towards the UK, i couldnt give a toss about them. Its a bit like questioning why wasnt France v whoever in the papers.

im not reading fk all dude i dont read them at all but yeah i cant see why the welsh version of the national paper should be full of english **** <ok>.............i got no more 2 say on this subject tbh.............papers are full of **** end of <ok>

reading too much into something means you are overanalysing things, not reading the papers too much.

i agree crap red tops are full of crap but not the broadsheets <ok>

I suppose it's all regional. We whinge about the coverage the swans get in the welsh papers or the downer some jurnos have on the City.

Fractals, you see a picture, look at one component and see the same picture just in finer detail (more regionalised).

It was ever thus!

And their side is full of players earning a living in the BPL and Football League so why not give them some support? I know they would not support England but if the roles were reversed, Wales were there and RoI were not I think we would get a lot of support from them.

Oh just another point with the original question, who gives a toss about Eire, i certainly hold no affections for those parasites.

Can't agree with this Ronny. Parasites? Why? And to answer your previous quotes there were a lot of British, including Welsh, who went to work in Eire when the Irish economy was booming. You seem to have some sort of a downer on the Irish for whatever reason but that doesn't apply to football. I'm glad Ireland are there at Euro 2012 as it will mean we won't have blanket coverage of the English team, who have quite rightly earned their place, in the papers. As an Irishman living in Wales I have a great fondness for this country and have made many, many good Welsh friends over the years. However I cannot accept your bitterness or is it bias towards the Irish.

ok, fine, post this on a load of english clubs boards and see what reaction you'd get! yes give the irish the credit and give them a decent amount of coverage by all means, but the english are known for their level of support and interest towards their national team <ok>

Come on Swamp, this is a discussion on our board, not English clubs. What they think is irrelevant to us. I'm sure they would love us too!!!! Not.

Irishbluebird.
Its the whole tin whistle thing for me, you cant tell me that the Irish dont hate the British, and please dont split it down to just the English, will i watch Eire, no i will not, will i support England, yes i probably will, i support Cardiff City, no body else, no premiership team, if we went bust, i would only support Wales or a Team GB, many Welsh football fans support English premiership clubs and then quite hypocritically slag of England ! Perhaps its because i am older than most on here but i can remember the 1970 world cup, at the time i was 9 but the everlasting memory of that world cup, apart from the greatest team to ever play (Brazil) was the Support of the whole country for England, i can remember our living room packed with blokes watching the games and the disappointment of England losing. I will support any of the home nations if they qualify for a major tournament however Eire is a foreign country and the whole country has no affinity towards nothing British, sorry for the bitterness but it is also historical and probably wrong to debate it on a football forum, i have my views and you will have yours, so be it. I dont like the Southern Irish and that is that.
