    Have you never read bill Bryson's " the mother tongue" or whatever it's called? It is 70% French and you don't need to mention Latin because French comes from Latin anyway

    I have a copy in the house, and you don't need to mention French because it comes from Latin anyway.

    It's an excellent book, but I've been really interested etymology since my days learning Dutch and noticing many common roots. I've also tried a couple of his travel books but find them a bit boring.

    It certainly makes things if you are trying to work out the meaning of a word you don't know. I wish my school did Latin when I was there, then knowing the stem of a word would be even easier.
