Voted for Steven Davis. He was instrumental in so much of our good play. Proper leader and captain, from what I could tell.
Two from the past just for their pre-match warm ups. John Burridge Frankie Worthington and his pre-match keepie ups.
Why not Bobby Stokes? That's the ultimate cult hero. Coming from the city of our rivals and scoring the biggest goal in our history.
Is Bobby Stokes a 'cult' hero though? I mean, pretty much he'd be one of the faces on the Saints' Mount Rushmore. Along with Le Tiss, Le Tiss (younger version), and Le Tiss (older version).
For those with long memories, Jimmy Gabriel and Frank Saúl, and the very tough Iván Golac. All three had.a presence, a character about them
I can’t look past Marsdon. Loved the man. Think we’re missing Neil Shipperley. First person I saw score at the Dell. please log in to view this image
He was arrested not long back for flashing his knob to a mother and daughter from his white van. Not very heroic. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18063192.ex-saints-player-neil-shipperley-flashes-mother-teenage-daughter/#:~:text=EX-SOUTHAMPTON player Neil Shipperley, teenage daughter, a court heard.&text=He pleaded guilty to a,distress, at Uxbridge Magistrates Court. EDIT: But there was another striker from that era. Bloke we signed from Plymouth, who scored a few goals to help keep us up and then disappeared. He was a bit of a cult hero at the time if I remember rightly. EDIT EDIT: Mickey Evans!
F**k Shipperley. I’ll take Gordon Watson as my 2nd cult hero as he was the second person I saw score at the Dell.
That's why I think maybe I made a mistake with Franny and he shouldn't be in the poll, he has become a full blown legend with his exploits since he retired.
I saw a Mickey Evans match worn shirt from 1997 on ebay for about £50, some of those go for £100s... This one... please log in to view this image I remember the last away game of the season he was honoured by Saints fan who wore bumpkin straw hats and false sideburns!
There’s almost a built-in filtering system in the poll already. I would argue that Yoshida’s clear lead also marks him out as a full blown legend, as everyone loves Maya. Same with Franny and Guly.
Yeah was at that game now you mention it. Lost 1-0 to Villa but still stayed up. Fans were excellent that day. I remember wearing sideburns for it too.
