Following on from the Pirlo retirement thread I thought it might be fun to post footage (thank you YouTube) of our favourite non QPR players. Me, I love a proper, skilful, defender. Bobby Moore may have been the greatest, but my memories of him are fading. The best I have seen, and possibly the best player I have seen on a regular basis, is Paolo Maldini.
I was a big fan of Kevin Keegan back in the day, particularly after his move to Hamburg. How unusual was that at the time.
Like Mr Bowles, I always had a soft spot for the entertaining Mavericks of the 1970s, such as Frank Worthington, Duncan McKenzie, Charlie George and their like.
Not one of the usual suspects, I used to be a big fan of Roberto Donadoni. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=donadoni skills video&view=detail&mid=AF5809DC5280F8FC0CB7AF5809DC5280F8FC0CB7&FORM=VIRE
Hugely underrated, he was in the same Milan team as Maldini, which didn’t have a weak spot. Best team, club or country, I have ever seen. Except for the Dutch team Cruyff/Rep/Neeskens/Krol era.
I was just about to post this! Great player and fascinating bloke, apparently his (positive) influence on Man Utd was huge. I was very impressed by his thoughtful contribution to the Bobby Charlton programme too.
Maldini and Roberto Donadoni. I’ll do Baresi now Apparently, when he first took over at Milan the mad genius Arrigo Sacchi was struggling to win over the dressing room to his methods. He took the Defence aside for some concentrated training and then played a practice match, 6 offensive players v 4 defenders plus the keeper. Every time the offensive players lost the ball the game was restarted 5 metres further away from the defenders’ goal. Not only did the offensive players not score, they spent most of the time in their own half. They listened to him after that. Sacchi never credited wins to individuals, or even the team, but to the ‘system’. But he also said that he ran the team like directing an opera - he allocated the roles, but it was up to the players how to interpret them.
