I'm a man in his middle fifties. I have 2 daughters and have held some jobs where I've had to be incredibly controlled and reserved in the face of some provocation. No problem. Take me to a football match and it all comes out. I am a child of The Shelf. I find sitting at Wembley surrounded by families very, very difficult. I've been thrown out of pubs when watching games for my language and the wife and kids stay well away from the lunatic I become when I watch at home. I don't hold with anything racist, homophobic or similar but will use every swear word under the sun. I miss the terraces. That was football!
Same here fella. I'm in my early forties but grew up standing on the North Bank at Highbury. Loved those days, and even if you lost you could still have some great banter with the away fans. If you out sang them, especially away from home, sometimes that counted more that the result of the game. I know the game and times have moved on, but I despair sometimes at the modern footie fan. At the emirates, I've been told to sit down, stop swearing and even asked not to shout ffs Looking back I realise that I was part of something special in those old days of standing on the terraces. I'd love to see safe standing introduced into PL grounds. the modern designs are safe and tried and tested. It would give those who want to stand and sing together the chance to do so, rather than being sat next next to a young family or some tourists in the modern identikit stadiums.
Motty retiring is just another sharp reminder of the passing of time for me. But his commentating of Hereford Utd v Newcastle in 1972 has to be the ultimate for this old Mackem!
Sounds familiar! In my head the pitch looked like a turnip field, but the skunks got their asses handed to them big time. I was just 12 at the time though. Motty's had some great moments though. Hard to pick a favourite.
Anyone who says this is chatting it Watching footy on the box with zero commentary is dire since you end up turning the crowd off too
About ten years ago I was one of about 8 people who had a boozy lunch with Motty (and Mihir Bose who was a big noise at the BBC at the time and who also turned out to be incredibly dull) in an Italian restaurant in Mayfair. He was a bit odd, drank a lot, fell asleep for 5 minutes after he'd had his main course and then woke up to continue the story he'd been telling like he'd never drifted off. I can't provide any photographic or redacted financial statements to prove the above is true.
Go to a match then, you tellyclapper. Plenty of cheap seats at Wembley this season. So no excuses. Prem football at £20 for adults
Best Motty moment: saying the champions against Everton 16/17 was the greatest performance he had ever seen by a Premiership side.. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/chelseas-5-0-win-over-9212569 Speaking about the performance, Motson says: "This was the best 90 minute performance I have ever seen in the Premier League. "I put it above anything I ever saw from Arsenal when they were at their best and I put it above anything I saw from Manchester United. This was football on another planet."
