My old man worked on the Great West Road with the bloke wot played him. I think he said the poor kant ended up on the drink

Mark Lester....think he became a physio or something like that. I think he did have a drink problem.

edit. just seen sb's reply....Mark Lester definitely hit the drink. Jack Wild aka Dodger also had a drink issue I believe and died quite young, sadly.
 
On second thoughts, it was probably the chap's father he worked with. Maybe it was his Dad who hit the bottle

Looks like after 38 year acting hiatus he's back business with 1066.

Lester will return to acting in the 2015 film 1066, starring as King Harold II.[10] The film will also see the acting debut of his son Felix.[10]
