Mark: The absolute worst thing anyone could say about you is that you were a selfish, moral blank, whose lazy cynicism and sneering, ironic take on the world encapsulates everything wrong with a generation.

Jez: Jesus Mark, why didn't you bang one [ecstasy]?
Mark: Because I don't want to wake up dribbling in a phone box with a trucker's penis in my ear!

Bit hit and miss for me. Genius in parts, tripe in others.

Latest series was pretty disappointing, first two were mostly good. Any sketch show like that is hit and miss really.

    Haway.

The Simpsons - The Greatest Comedy of My Generation - especially seasons 3 - 11. Consistently the greatest, beyond doubt.
Monty Python - Hit and Miss - but groundbreaking and at times deeply intelligent. Basically the goons for the TV generation.
Anything by The Dark Lord Sir Christopher of Morris, On The Hour, The Day Today, Brasseye, Four Lions.
The 'Alan Partridge's Road to USA World Cup 94' Segment of The Day Today
    I'm Alan Partridge.

    Or if we're talking standup.

    The Latter-day Prophet Bill Hicks.

Ministry of Funny walks was Cleese's best moment, with Fawlty Towers not far behind.

OK then, an honourable mention to the Fast Show, a true pioneer of great comedy.

Noble and Silver - Post modern brilliance.

Jerry Sadowitz - Greatest comic of all time.

The Simpsons - Obviously it's **** now but at a time it was magnificent. Layered, structured and ****ing funny.

South Park - I'm positive this was created in Bill Hick's head.

Bellamy's People - Another overlooked gem

And i'll stop now. I love this question. More like this!

My favourite comedy masterpiece has to be The Bible.

    Hilarious stuff.

Chris Morris what a legend! Watched Brasseye again earlier in the week almost forgotten just how good it is. He made the first season of The IT Crowd for me as well. It is still good without him but not as good.

Not the Nine O'Clock News - pioneering comedy can't believe it hasn't been mentioned.
Derek & Clive - totally crass at times but so funny.
    Monty Python
    Blackadder
    Fawlty Towers
