Following on from Canaries Soccer's off-topic thread about comedy; thought I would follow one up about music. What city in the world is most significant for your music taste and who sums the city up? I'll start with BRIGHTON which has given us The Lo Fidelity All Stars; The Midfield General and The Go! Team
Being a "sixties" child, it HAS to be Liverpool with a huge list of sons and daughters too numerous to mention, from the Beatles at the top of the list through Cilla, The Four Pennies, The Mersey Beats, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the list is endless! Aw man, I finally found another Lo-Fidelity All-Stars fan on here - cool! Battleflag sure is an awesome track from an awesome and entirely underrated album, good call mate
Munky- Glad I warmed up your brain farm old boy! What's your choice of City? Dave- You make a good case for Liverpool, but by nominating Liverpool you are taking responsibility for the 90's legends Cast(!)
I still love 'Walk this land', by E-Z Rollers, who are from the fine county of Norfolk. I first heard this on the "Storm from the East" album - way before Lock, stock etc got hold of it. Storm from the East was made to showcase talent from East Anglia
Has to be Manchester for me I'm afraid. Being slightly younger than Dave my musical influences come from a bit further north and a bit after the Merseyside hey-day. Some of my very favourite bands are mancs, like The Charlatans (ok, technically from Northwich but near enough), Stone Roses, The Smiths, Joy Division, Happy Mondays, The Verve, Oasis etc
Can't believe no-one's gone for NYC. The Velvet Underground, Dylan, Talking Heads, Television, The Ramones, Blondie, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo (sort of), The Strokes, The Walkmen, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend...
Detroit. With the exception of gun crime and cars manufacturing everyone associates Detroit with Motown and Eminem, as a city it has an amazing musical pedigree which has inspired lots of producers and DJs alike. Detrioit Techno is the real heart and soul of the cities music scene. The likes of Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Sauderson, Carl Craig, Jeff Mills and many more. I'm a massive fan of rockabilly and blues. Johnny cash especially but load of the. Sun records stuff, Sam Phillips sure could find talent. So for me the best music city is Nashville.
Having, like Dave, the sixties as my informative years, it's hard to go against his choices. Even so, to me, London edges it. My personal favourites, The Kinks and The Small Faces, then numerous others; The Stones, The Who, Procol Harum, The Yardbirds, not to mention Led Zeppelin and Bowie. Having said that, it's great to see such varied opinions, and for me as a music fan for 'n' years, still to learn about stuff I've never heard of! Great thread!
If you ever get the chance to see the musical 'The Million Dollar Quartet' mate you should definitely go, you'd love it! Took the missus to see it on the West End last year and it was amazing, all about the one day in '56 when Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were in the studio together. Incredible musicians, Jerry Lee in particular was out of this world! Good shout for NYC by the way, though forgive me for being a pedant, but Dylan ain't a New Yoiker
Great question in which I have no answer. My music taste is so varied, on my Ipod I have Pavarotti to Kanye West. Mostly into alternative/indie and also probably a rare 18 year old who loves 60's music. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix etc. are incredible. This cover by the Dirty Mac which includes John Lennon, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton probably sums up how brilliant 60's music was at the time. Brilliant stuff. Getting back to the question ,instead of banging on about a period, I just think all the music I listen to is scattered but Manchester has had so many great bands come out of there it's crazy! So I will go for Manchester personally.
Yeah really want to see it. Next best thing to going and seeing them live. Always feel sorry for Carl Perkins had a massive hit when he wrote Blue Suede Shoes, then had a big car crash and got out of hospital to find Elvis at the top of the charts with his song.
Not from there, but it's where he made his name, so I'm including him. Also failed to mention it's the birthplace of Hip-Hop as well.

Philadelphia produced the virtuoso guitarist but multi instrumental Todd Rundgren, probably known better for his producing. And if you want a link find it yourself you lazy buggers.
I apologise for this but I HAD to share this! I have always loved yodelling, I thought I could yodel reasonably well, then I saw this!
