I have seen the Pogues 4 times and find it strange that they are now associated with Xmas at all. The bands that released these records did it for money I guess and good luck to them. But the price must be a big one to swallow in terms of their creative kudos It's very hard to do Xmas with any taste at all IMO. Let's face it ... It's one big shop now online and that's not going away ever. Corporations in retail live and die now these weeks and the whole thing is shifting to Black Friday anyway... Which should say it all really. Would love Chopin to make a come back and predict that in order to breakaway from a Xmas spirit that involves Slade and anything Red and Green they will need to reinvent it all including the music because it has **** all to do with a religion If the devil has won then he should change his playlist. Who is the actual Sheperd? There can only be one outcome More debt and the irony is that the sheep go back out to graze on the 26th knowing there are terror wolves out there in the form of a group who's God is different Crazy World It needs Music to send out a true message of Xmas IMO Could we not start to feed some lyrics on here to help people see We must have musicians on here? I contribute this line for our not 606 Xmas song Wake up people it's Xmas you are expected to spend more than you have got To buy things for other people in the autumn and wrap them until they rot
Hark The Herald Angels Sing. Powerful music with beautiful, poetic lyrics. In terms of pop, agree with Uber - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard.
Yep this for me, fairytale of New York was one I used to like however heard it far too many times and it just gets on my tits. Strange thing about that song video Shane McGowan can't (or certainly couldn't at that time) play the piano and there is/was no NYPD choir. Trivia for pub quizzes that
Used to be The Pogues until it was played to death like Slade and Wizzard.....Now it's this one from the Pretenders, Chrissie still looks hot in a Sally Army uniform!! Honourable mentions to Kate Bush, Jethro Tull, Stevie Wonder and of course John Lennon.
I've always liked Dean Martin's 'Let it Snow.' The problem with this song though is that once you realise that it was aimed at the homeless it has seriously dark undertones. Only joking about the homeless bit.
I like two Christmas songs equally, Fairytale of New York and Band Aid, do they know it's Christmas. Both have obvious Irish/UK connections.
All Christmas songs get on your nipples after a while but still has to be 'Fairytale of New York' for me
I just sat at the pc, concentrating on the lyrics to find the "Dark Overtones" that had passed me by all these years. When I couldn't see them I scrolled up and rad the last line. I can't tell you how much of a dork I felt cheers 9's. merry Christmas
Pogues & Kirsty, Chris Rea - driving home for Xmas, Shakin Stevens Merry Christmas Everyone However after the first Xmas party I am usually cheesed off with them
There was a documentary on Sky Arts on Christmas Eve about it - have recorded it to watch, and apparently it is very good - he was petrified at losing his trademark "grin"!!! Have seen the band a few times, they tend to tour in December, and they always end on "Fairytale" - which I used to love, but it is definately overplayed, as are most good Christmas songs
Many of you will remember my post earlier this year about my friend Nina, who was diagnosed with cancer when 32 weeks pregnant. It's been a great year for them, with the birth of little Teddy, her treatment going very well, and her wedding a few weeks back to Ed. Christmas gave them another nice treat. You will all have heard the Christmas No 1, by the NHS Choir. Well, Ed is the guitarist on the track and is featured in the video. Capping off such a year by playing on the Christmas No 1 isn't too shabby!!
Nice to hear some good news at this time of year Chaz, instead of stories about floods etc, although I do feel sorry for them. Thoughts out to all those who are suffering in any way at this time of year (esp Finglas and Col who are both havibg a ****ty time of it)
