Lemmy Kilmister ”Run Rudolph Run” - Slade ”Merry Xmas Everybody” - John Lennon ”Merry Xmas (War is Over)”
Springsteen-Santa Claus is coming to town Darkness-don’t let the bells end Greg Lake-I believe in Father Christmas
It was Slade, Merry Christmas Everybody. I don't think this is the correct thread, I think there is another one with videos and the result. I'll see if I can find it later as I'm busy preparing dinner at the moment.
Here's the thread with the result ... https://www.not606.com/threads/qpr-not606-christmas-no-1-update.109677/
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is my favourite but I may have got the wrong end of the stick on this one.
I have to say that I am in full agreement with you on that one, Stanners. When done properly it has a haunting Dickensian vibe that chills me in a good way.
Last Friday I spent a blissful hour in the atmospheric gloom of my favourite building, Durham Cathedral, while in an adjacent hall the boys choir was practicing its Christmas repetoire, including God Rest. Even for a horrible old athiest cynic like me, battling with an epic hangover, it was incredibly moving, and rather spooky because I was about the only person in there. I sat on a bench in the Cloisters, despite the freezing cold, and listened quietly for at least twenty minutes, thinking of nothing. Now for some MR James ghost stories to really get in the Christmas mood....
I always read Ghost Stories of MR James on the run up to Christmas. (Glad I'm not the only one) They always used to have a Christmas Ghost story on BBC, I wonder if they will this year
Apparently Mark Gatiss, a huge M R James fan, has done one in homage style for BBC Four. https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a25613311/mark-gatiss-dead-room-bbc-four/ His previous adaptions have been good, not great, for me. Love this version though But reading them in front of the fire is best. I left my massive collected short stories volume on a plane or a train somewhere years ago. Downloaded e version to Kindle, but it’s not the same. I’m off to buy some books as presents so I’m going to replace the paper version, cheers Beth! As an aside, this year we are following a new mantra in present buying for the now grown up kids: - something to wear - something they need (always cash) - something they want (probably cash, though Vinnie has his eyes on some power tools) - something to read I rather like this guide to focussed gift giving.
Used to love the Charlie Brown cartoons as a kid, and my daughter loves this song. Though I prefer the instrumental version
1. The Christmas song (chestnuts roasting on an open fire). Nat King Cole 2. White Christmas Bing Crosby 3. Fairytail of New York The Pogues
1. Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid 2: Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms 3: Little Drumer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby version Other honorable mentions: Last Christmas - Wham!, Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin Stevens, Blue Christmas - Elvis Pressley, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon, Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano, It's the most Wonderful Time of Year - Andy Williams
The most wonderful Christmas Carol performed by the equally wonderful Alison Krauss and Yo Yo Ma.....enjoy
DeadRoom does look good. I agree "Whistle and I'll come to you" was really good. His last one "The Tractate Middoth" was OK, but as it is not really one of MR James best stories, I think it was the story rather than the filming that let it down. You cannot beat an old fashioned Ghost story Stan I agree
