Ritchie was certainly a very hard working and honest forward. Don't remember him being mega prolific in front of goal but that promotion team had goals all the way through it. Even Ray Cashley, who I saw score against Millwall in 1975 (I think) during a night match. Plus Sweeney's penalties, Whitehead, etc I also remember Ritchie and Donnie Gillies being picked for Scotland U23's against England at St James Park Newcastle. The highlights were on TV around Midnight (and on a school night too !) but my Mum let me stay up and watch the dreadful 0-0 draw and both City players were subs if my memory serves.
Cole was a cut above everything we had at City when he first arrived. The hat trick he got at Luton was sublime. Joe Royle scored (4?) on his debut for us didn't he ?
Another couple hardly ever mentioned are Trevor Tainton and Jimmy Mann, I used to love these two, dependable, skillful and both worked and had the stamina of workhorses.
I was at school with Trevor Tainton, he was in the year below me. Captained Bristol Boys and played for England boys. From what I remember he suffered from cramp a lot but was certainly a quality player.
Another midfielder I liked was John Emanuel. I remember watching him and Eddie Woods in a reserve game when they both effectively were on trial from Ferndown in South Wales. Tidy player who subsequently played for his national side a couple of times.Wales.
Me too, Mann had one hell of a powerful shot too, you could go through the whole team , Whitehead immense on the wing, Merrick and Collier central defence . I also saw Cashley score direct from a goal kick , I can’t remember who it was against, it was a windy night match , the goalie misjudged the bounce and it went over his head into the net. Amazing memories
And Mann's winner into the bottom corner at Bolton (Burden Park) on the opening day of the season in 1977 (?) when we won 2-1 and it was on MOTD ?
Didn't Trevor Tainton go and become a Security Guard at a power station after his City career ? Very skilful winger. Not blessed with huge pace, but great ball skills.
I think he scored the winner in a 1-0 win at AG against Man United in 1972/1973, or was it 1973/1974 ? United 'fans' smashed up Coronation Road on their way back to Temple Meads. We won in Manchester too by the same score line that season with Donnie Gillies getting the winner in stoppage time. Afterwards the ever gracious Tommy Docherty said we were the worst team he'd ever seen. Not sour grapes you understand..... Happy days !
GALLEY scored a hatrick on his debut.. against Huddersfield I think it was away as cant remember seeing them go in the net so likely was away as only been to Huddersfield ground once and that was a while after he started playing for us
