I visited Blenheim this year and must admit I was rather disappointed, perhaps my expectations were too great but it was like many other stately homes I've visited and with some renovation work going on perhaps that contributed to the overall experience.

On the Churchill connection a far better visit was Chartwell which was his home in Kent and just seemed to be more interesting as a snapshot of his wartime years...

I proposed to Mrs SM on the steps of the Duomo - I can guarantee you that has cost me far more than the ten euros you paid for your coffee.....<laugh>

    Wow! That is spectacular.

No, never performed at the Minack, but maybe one day if we ever get our retirement down to that neck of the woods.
Yes, it was built by a lady called Rowena Cade with the help of her gardener initially.

Himeji Castle, Japan. Actually this is just the Keep, it’s the centre of a huge complex of armouries, stores, barracks with sunken, maze like, easily defended paths and external walls and moat. Unfortunately the tower was covered in scaffolding when I went. Modern Japanese architecture is rather utilitarian and dull (not exclusively of course) but the old castles and temples are beautiful. And they rival the Scandinavians for interior design, in my untutored opinion.

Yes sorry Ellers I hadn't read your post properly but it must have been the bridge you saw. Those caissons you refer to were huge to take the full weight of the concrete Towers. When I got there the towers were up on one side of the water (Tsing Yi) and half way up on the other (Ma Wan Island). Part of my job involved going to a huge yard in China where we sub assembled all of the deck units which were a thousand tons each. Once they were made they went on flat top barges down to HK and we're lifted in place.
The whole process was fascinating and a particularly interesting job for a plain old beancounter like me!

The Roman aqueduct in Segovia. Only 2000 years old. The enormous 18th century one in Lisbon is pretty impressive too.
