The best film ever is Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo (or, to give it it's english translation, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly). People write it off because it's a western, but this film redifined the genre. It is Leone's masterpiece, a work of cinematographic art (it is the best cinematography i've ever seen, some of the images are stunning), with a soundtrack that complements the images better than in almost any other film (the master Morricone near his best). Added to that three wonderfully textured characters, the performance of Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef's lives and one of Clint Eastwood's best as well. If you haven't seen it, watch it, and then change your list.

(other opinions are of course available, but they are of course wrong).

I gave up watching cowboy films when I was eleven years old.

Escape To Victory? At least it has relevance to Football.

I prefered the sequel Escape to HMS Victory. Loosley connected to football it involves a club owned by wealthy gun-runners who never paid their bills. The plot is dramatic but is mostly a comedy and although you could see it coming a mile off, the finale is the funniest thing you're ever likely to see.

Is that a blue movie?

Casablanca

Here's looking at you, kid..! Did he say that line in that film..? ;)

Can't say I have a favourite film. There are several in the running though. They would be...

The Searchers [John Wayne]
2001 - A Space Odyssey [Just... wow..!]
The Shawshank Redemption [Get busy living or get busy dying]
Open Range [Kevin Costner]
Ice Cold In Alex [Worth Waiting For]
Master and Commander [...always choose the lesser of two weevils..!]
It's a Wonderful Life [George Bailey lassoos the Moon]
Some Like it Hot [Curtis, Lemmon, Monroe]
Henry V [1991 version]

...and several more that I can't think of at the moment. Then there's the many hundreds of others that are close behind those above. And anyway, it's liable to change depending on mood. I don't actually like the Western genre as a rule, but the two above are superb films.

BTW, any chance of the mods putting the U in FAVOURITE FILMS of the title, rather than staying with that awful US English and Windows spelling of the word..? It makes me feel ill enough every time I make the mistake of using Internet Explorer, without it passing into the everyday language of GB.

De Niro is one of my favourite actors and taxi Driver is awesome. Deer Hunter is also great, but you really have to be in a zone to watch that.

Law Abiding Citizen probably my favorite film - I remember when I first watched it how hooked I was from start to finish.

It frustrates me that films like Chinatown and Reservoir dogs would not be made these days. The days in which a film is driven by a good script are long gone and now CGI seems to rule all. And actors have gone downhill too with not enough English actors. It's a shame that we have to see people like Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling who if you are a straight male contribute nothing. Actors like Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley are ticking on know and with the exception of Tom Hardy are not being replaced. I mean has anyone here seen the film Sexy beast ? Kingsley gives probably the best performance in the last 50 years.

Loved The Blues Brothers. I coached one of the 'orphans' when I worked out in USA, Butch Williams. Great kid, terrible footballer.

There are still films being made with good scripts. I recommend you check out Tyranosaur and We Need to Talk About Kevin. There are still good films being made, just not a lot good coming out in terms of Blockbusters (Christopher Nolan aside of course).
