is that right spanish?

surely that is very odd. i mean technically you did spend money in the summer - how much was it? £50k or something like that. but does that mean he's saved most of his budget for january? you can't have much to spend.

perhaps your owner thought mccarthy was going to leave during the summer and saved the money in case he needed a new manager? who knows!

Spanish, if you bother to read the article properly, it is very clear that ME put the squeeze on MM during the summer, after being let down by the previous 2 boneheads in charge (about 1/4 way through the article)
Funds will be made available during the next window if necessary but the amount involved would be anyone's guess...apology accepted. <ok>

Town boss Mick McCarthy will have money available to strengthen his squad in January if he needs it, according to joint-MD Jonathan Symonds.

“Absolutely,” he told TWTD when asked if funds would be available during the next transfer window. “There’ll be money to spend, if necessary.”

McCarthy added significantly to his squad over the summer but the £20,000 paid to Waterford United for youngster Jack Doherty was the only fee paid.

Symonds’s fellow MD Ian Milne says that this was partly down to so many Championship players being available on Bosman free transfers during the close season, Financial Fair Play and also owner Marcus Evans having seen that spending large sums of money doesn’t necessarily bring success under previous managers.

“Marcus has gone through the whole gamut of managers and players, spending fortunes on players and getting nothing, but at the moment he feels at ease, as I think we all do, with the signings we made this year."

He says Town have made a conscious effort to get current players tied down: “There have been a number of negotiations and extensions to contracts and all the players we’ve got are on quite decent length contracts.

“That’s a nice confidence to have, that we have people on staff, so to speak, for some period of time.”

Despite newspaper reports to the contrary, Milne says there are no plans to further extend Aaron Cresswell’s contract with the left-back’s current deal stretching to 2015 with an option for a further season.

“I think we’ve comfortable with that at the moment,” he said. “He is an asset and I think he’s a future left-back for England. At this time he stays playing with us and he’s very happy to do so.”

Cresswell was linked with several Premier League clubs in the summer but none of them ultimately firmed up their apparent interest.

Would Mick McCarthy get cash to reinvest in his squad if the 23-year-old were to be sold in January? “There is money there. Clearly Marcus’s financial commitment is with the club.

"We haven’t had any bids and it’s difficult to speculate about that,” Symonds added. “We’re very pleased that he’s an Ipswich Town player right now.”

“If a player went, I’m sure Mick would be the first one to negotiate, ‘OK, that one [goes], I want money for that’,” Milne continued.

“There’s going to be a bargain going on there and Marcus would, forgive the pun, have to play ball with Mick on that. But you don’t know until you’ve got an active situation.”

Milne says manager McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans continue to be the men doing all Town’s transfer business: “Marcus and Mick do all the buying and selling and discussion on that. We stay out of that, although Marcus does talk to us about it.

“We, along with [club secretary] Sally Webb, get involved in the contractual stuff, but who comes and who goes is up to Mick and Marcus, and who plays is purely Mick.”

But they may get involved in the transfer dealing side of the club’s management in the future, Symonds adds: “If there’s a reason to do it, yes.

“Right now, Mick manages the team and we manage the business. There has to be a need for us to get involved, but right now it’s working very well.

“Mick has got a good team, he works directly with Marcus on that and there doesn’t seem any reason to change that. But if needs must, we will, of course.”

I'm not doubting his credentials as a manager, but the frastrating thing is....is exactly that, FRUSTRATING!! Everyone seems to see where we are falling short (creativeness and pace up front) that is everyone bar MM, but he's not doing anything to change it..we have the personnel in Wordsworth, Taylor and Marriot to possibly give us all what we are crying out for, but he's being a stubborn so-and-so. If Marriot and Wordsworth are not up to it, then at least ship them out on loan. In fact..just do something that is just that tiny bit different, PLEASE! The same team and formation and tactics week in and week out are getting very boring, and very predictable.

Indeed I find him a very frustrating manager because he is a good manager and I think he really could be a top PL manager but he's too cautious and stubborn. But that's no reason to get rid, every manager we've ever had makes decisions which the majority of fans disagree with, it's just what happens. Ones thing for sure we're better off sticking with Mick for the next couple of seasons than him going, particularly this season.

One positive to come from all this is I geuss it's made a fairly uninteresting season interesting, it's certainly sparked this forum into action

Jewell signed Taylor but surprisingly McCarthy signed Wordsworth. Seems a unlike Mick to sign a player like him tbh, I found it a little strange (yet pleasing) at the time and it appears he doesn't have a place for Wordsworth. Think we may struggle to fit Taylor in aswell, neither I feel are players Mick particularly trusts or is comfortable with, again probably because they're unpredictable. Mick is fairly predictable and i think he likes his players to be aswell.

No apology as we actually dont know how much Mick was allowed to spend, no i am not saying he had a budget of 3 or 4 million but i find it highly unlikely that ME told Mick he only had 20k. I think Mick was more than happy with his freebies, he probably had a budget of about 1 million but was happy with what he got, after all 1 million does not buy much and there are probably freebies out there that would be worth more than a million if they wern't free transfers.
I do actually agree with the tightening of purse strings though, we cant afford to go throwing money about when we are in so much debt!!

thanks ptc.

i like taylor. i know he's a bit of a loose canon but that's partly why i like him - and why mick will hate him! play him off mcgoldrick and you'd have a nice little forward line but he doesn't do what mccarthy wants from a centre forward - he just doesn't fit in.

wordsworth is crap. sorry, but he is. he's got an eye for goal, especially from range but he isn't up to the championship imo and i'm not surprised to see him struggle to get into your team. he had one very good year at colchester where everything he hit went in but ask their fans what they thought of him and it won't make for pleasant listening. i suppose the reason many are clamouring for him is because you simply have no creative spark in midfield and wordsworth does at least offer something from the middle of the park but the fact he's quite lazy won't ever endear him to your manager.

that is very fair comment. you signed a few freebies who had they commanded a fee, would have probably cost around £2m combined, maybe more. but then that is good management.

To be fair MM has taken us up a fair few levels from the hole we were in last year...

Why do people think that he should declare himself out of the running for a job that he has not applied for or been contacted about, if it was me i'd just be carry on and see what turns up, even if MM does not want to move back into International management just yet keeping quiet could strengthen any negotiations on his contract or even availablity of funds from Evans, also it might be that rather than doing things in the press he thinks it would be more respectful to actually speak to whomever it is face to face maybe saying its a little bit early but would be interested in a few years time.

Look Spanish we will never see eye to eye on Mick and differing opinions are what makes this forum interesting. Just admit that you are wrong and then we can all move on! <laugh>. <ok>

At least neither of us can be accused of knee jerk reactions, you always wanted Mick and will always stick by him whereas i have always been the opposite!!
