i'm not sure about that! outside of celtic and rangers, any manager of an spl club will be interested in championship vacancies. i just wonder why butcher is brought up. yes, he's done pretty well at inverness but his track record before that was more than a little ropey. it would be unfair to judge him on his early managerial career at coventry and sunderland (was it sunderland or middlesbrough? i forget!) but his time at brentford was disastrous. he did ok at motherwell but nothing special. he seems to suit that particular job up in scotland but in my opinion he'd be a huge risk for ipswich. i suppose one advantage would be that he'd have the fans on board from the start.
There is always a dangerous sentimentality involved when former heroes are being connected with their former club. The only time it worked well for us was George but it didn't go so well for Magilton. I mentioned Terry in a tongue-in-cheek way in an earlier post but I'm just not convinced that he would be the answer. I just hope that Mick stays this will be the best case scenario!
i agree with you warky (although i think magilton did a pretty good job for you too and was harshly dismissed) and i think mccarthy staying would be the best way forward for you. but he will need a little bit of help from above (not in the biblical sense!). it's asking a lot of any manager to get promoted without spending a penny on a transfer fee, when the side he inherited was sitting rock bottom of the league just a year earlier.
Well this is what Butcher said last time around.. 'one of my old clubs, the club I started playing football with.' "It's just paper talk and speculation," Butcher said of the reports linking him with a move to Portman Road. "It's one of my old clubs, the club I started playing football with. So it's nice to be mentioned in terms of that but that's all it is, just paper talk." Butcher has never shown any intent to come back to Ipswich.
I know there's no doubting that he wants the job but considering he's already had the job before and he's been here for such a short time I think he should if offered turn it down and show some loyalty and respect to the club. By doing what he's doing currently I get the feeling he's not respecting the club as fully as he should and thinks he's bigger than the club. As I said before unlike Alf and Bobby he's had the job before and they served the club for a long period of time, Mick hasn't been with us for very long, he's only just into the project, I think it would say alot about the man if he were to leave so soon. Add to that his Irish accent is questionable
Come on PTC Most of us knew that we were lucky to get a high profile manager like Mick in the first place and that his services will be very much sought after. It is no surprise that he is being linked to the ROI job and he made no secret that he wanted to one day return to international management. Yes the speculation is unhelpful but painting him as being disrespectful to the club is plain nonsense. What he did for us last year should be taken into account and if and when he leaves he should be treated with the respect that he has deserved.
I don't get the "MM has done a fantastic job with the little or zero money he's spent" theory... There's no denying he did an excellent job last season in keeping us up, and steadying the ship, but thats all he seems to be capable of at the moment. The fact that he's started with the same 11 for the last six games sums him perfectly...he won't change anything and is a one trick ponly. Other teams will know exactly how we're going to line up and will play to our weaknesses. Its been said on here we need some new faces in the transfer window, a creative midfielder and a new striker.. errr HELLO...what about Wordsworth and Marriot..and guess what, we don't have to pay anything for them! MM has gone beyond his best before date, and is starting to getting a little stale. We need to get to the next level, and he is NOT the man to do it, regardless of how funny and straight-talking he is. We're like a broken record at the moment, just stuttering along..we need some fresh new ideas and someone to mix things up a bit. I honestly don'y think we really need to spend any more on new players, as i think the ones that have not yet been given then chance can possibly do it for us (Marriot, Taylor, Wordsworth, Hewitt...etc) Mick - A huge and heart warming thank you for what you did for us last season and how you have given us a very steady platform, but please do everyone a huge favour and pack your Green n Orange tracksuit and take the next plane to Dublin.
Personally i dont agree warky, if he was Irish then maybe i could see the pull but he isnt!! Why is it always managers that have just been sacked that we are after, we need someone who is currently in a job, doing well and looking for the next step up. Also, why always UK based, there are plenty of decent foreign managers out there that would do a good job and would also know a lot of different players than the norm that they could bring in.
I find this all a tad ironic! This time last year if I remember rightly, there was a load of you who all wanted to give Jewell more time! Fast Forward to this year and it seems that the majority of you cant wait to see the back of the man that saved our bacon! God help the next poor bastard that takes this job with fans like ours!
I agree with all those points, i.e we were lucky to get him last season, he did a superb job and it's no surprise he's being linked with the job but in this situation, I think he was just plain wrong to not dismiss these reports and given he's been with us for such a short period of time I think he should reject the job. Yes maybe in a couple of years once he's given a good fist of it here but not now. I do feel he is disrespecting the club by not doing so. Plus he's already done the job before and he isn't even really Irish!!! As I've said he's not exactly my cup of tea but I will be very dissapointed with him personally if he were to leave us for the job, I think he will have let us down tbh.
Stretchy Praise the lord, at last someone can see it!! Absolutely spot on mate but the fact that i agree is not in your favour im afraid.
Talk about a knee jerk reaction, MM is not able to take us to the next level because; A. He does not have the funds being made available B. The next level is a couple of seasons finishing mid table & above C. The club is trying to rebuild a heap of damage done by our last but 1 manager, namely getting our Academy back on track D. Steady but sure is always better than fast & lose, I would have thought it was obvious after the last 3-4 season we have endured. I am sure there are E. F. G. etc but thought this was enough for now. There is only one thing that does need sorting sooner rather than later MMs future, I think it is time for ME to put a bit of pressure on 1 or more parties involved to make a statement of intent one way or the other.!
Think you're underestimating him a bit there. He's not my cup of tea and certainly has glaring limitations as a manager but for this level in terms of getting points on the board there aren't if any any better. The season so far I think has gone how we've expected and it's far to early to be ruling us out of the playoffs, given the nature of this league as I said at the start of the season, some teams go on good runs whilst others then go on horrendus runs and we'll just plod along and maybe be in touching distance at the end of the season but if not midtable is very good progress. I believe if Mick left us this season, it would be a disaster for us even if we replaced him with my favourite Paul Tisdale as most managers won't be able to get what Mick has out of this bunch.
Hoppers The board has come out and said there is money available if needed which kinda blows that theory out of the water!!
