As is their stories of strike breaking in the 20s and 30s which is a pathetic attempt to justify their bitter jealousy and irrational hatred thought up by their mob in the 70s. Most of them are just brainwashed and have the same mentality as sectarianism in NI, they don't even know why they are supposed to hate us.
The old gentleman interviewed there had it absolutely right. Until football hooliganism became fashionable in the 70’s there was rivalry between the clubs, but definitely no hatred, and as has been said many times, many people went to watch both clubs, even if they only actually supported one of them.
Substitute “Why do you hate Southampton?”, “Because they are scum”. For “Why did you vote leave?”, “To get our sovereignty back”, and the mentality is no different, as they don’t really know the answer, but just repeat something someone else has said.
Don't pretend like the hatred only goes one direction though and don't pretend plenty of Southampton fans aren't brainwashed too. But was watching the T20 Blast final earlier and such a contrast to any football event, a carnival atmosphere, so many different costumes, good natured chanting and fans sat among each other with no problems, despite the fact that plenty of them were clearly drunk... Football fans always complain about not being able to drink in view of the pitch, but given the behaviour of fans as a whole, is it any wonder?
Agree PL but I believe the hatred from east to west is far far stronger & more aggressive than the other way.
The funny thing is that almost everybody I've ever met or worked with from Pompey have been pretty sound and TBH I can't say that I hate PFC but I just want us to do better than them because they irrationally hate SFC so much and I enjoy winding them up about it.
