We've had this discussion before so not sure it needs repeating. Not sure whether being close by or far away impacts on my ability to see objects being thrown at players on the pitch.
It doesn’t Although as I wasn’t referring to things being thrown on the pitch I’m not sure how that is relevant. The statement I quoted was your opinion that the reaction to events at City wasn’t over the top when you replied to Urika when he expressed his view that it was over the top, particularly in relation to the reaction to events in the city centre and at rugby. I do think that it is easier to have a well informed view on whether the reaction to incidents is over the top when you were there as the incidents took place. That applies whether you’re not at a game because in Australia or a pub on Anlaby Rd. My point was that the media seems keen to suggest the events are a sign of a return to 70s/80’s style football hooliganism. They have a vested interest in stirring up public interest, but although I didn’t see the event where one young person ran into the pitch, I have seen plastic bottles and celery thrown towards the pitch. That’s wrong, it shouldn’t happen. But I tend towards Urika’s opinion that the reaction is over the top, and certainly compared to things happening outside football.
My comment which you quoted was referring to general fan behaviour so I'm not entirely sure how an example of poor fan behaviour is irrelevant. In this instance it's not the media suggesting anything but rather our owners so I'm also not entirely sure how the media's perception is entirely relevant.
You replied to Urika who expressed his opinion that the media reporting, whether it initiated at the club or not, was over the top compared to the way incidents at rugby were reported, by giving your opinion that it wasn't over the top. It is still my opinion that it is easier to form an opinion about it if you go to the games that it is happening at, which is what I said. I was worried about the celery being thrown through. I don't like celery so what would have happened if some had landed in my mouth? Other than that I feel pretty safe at football nowadays.
Wasn't the celery thing started by Chelsea 'firm' who did it to bait opposition firms into a scrap? As far as I can see that tells you what you need to know about the mentality of the cretins chucking the stuff, and the reason behind them doing so. But no, just a harmless bit of youthful exuberance, premeditatedly bringing celery to a game. Nowt like the dark days at all...
If they’d squirted primula cheese into the celery I reckon it would have been a clear link we’re going back to the 70’s. I’m going to keep my eye out for any Black Forest gateau from now on
Nothing to do with Chelsea. Before most home games this season the club give away items of fruit etc on the concourses. There have been boxes of oranges, apples, bananas and on this occasion it was celery. So it was nothing sinister or pre planned, someone got a couple of sticks of celery from the free box and chucked it on the pitch. Does that warrant a ground closure these days ?
The team are lucky they weren't giving out rotten tomatoes on the concourse for some games this season.
It's 2022, not 1972. But if you want to ignore the abject state that fan disorder left football in between then and the Taylor report then feel free.
