First two have a place, in retro gaming, but are old skool turn based RPG. They hold sentimental value, but in themselves are trounced by Planescape:Torment, Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights in that arena. Where Fallout fought back was in modern sandbox RPG. There's only really 3 - Elder Scrolls Oblivion and, more impressively, Skyrim, Mass Effect 2 and 3, then Fallout 3, NV and now 4, which will cap them all. The Witcher series is a nice sideline but the production values of BioWare and Bethesda are huge.

Why Fallout wins is because you feel like you live it. In Elder Scrolls you obviously pretend, in Mass Effect you're the hero Shepard no matter what you do, but in Fallout you're a whatever person emerging from a vault and literally everything that follows is new.

Wasteland 2 is worth a look if you like Fallout 1 & 2 old school turn based RPG. So much dialogue has been written for this game alongside a rock solid combat system.

Pre-downloading this beauty as we speak. Tuesday cannot come freaking sooner! Anything Bethesda is golden.

Speaking of Witcher 3, was kinda disappointed with the amount of content. There are tons of levels, but not many contracts really, and I'm not a fan of crappy card games. Felt kind of lost.

Anyone would played through the first two I've talked to was dissapointed with Fallout 3. It's nothing to do with isometric sprites vs 3d, that's fine, the atmosphere and the stories didn't remotely measure up. At least some of the dark humour was retained, but it's no comparison to the humour found in fallout 1+2. Most disappointed in F3 are your companions. In fallout 2 they had a real personality.

I suppose F3 was a solid game, but to me it felt mostly like a reskin of Oblivion. Something about it just wasn't right.

If anyone wants, they can pick up fallout 1&2 on Good old games for a few quid and theyve both been fitted with resolution patches so they can be played in HD on large screens.

I'm going to give F4 a try, but I'm not holding my breath after seeing the trailer, it doesn't look like it's captured the atmosphere of the original fallouts in the least. It looks more like bioshock.

What I don't want to see in FO4 is encounter after encounter; what I mean is the desolation of wandering is a pivotal part of the game. To any FPS fan it would just appear boring, but for RPG it's essential. As you say, they must avoid competing with Bioshock; if I wanted to go kill mutants, I'd buy Bioshock.

For Fallout, after reaching L30, I was exploring and it was only when I checked my ever-depleting ammo reserves that a thought of "wow, life really is finite" hit me - that for me is the essence of the game, to try as far as you can to 'live it' and I think that's where Bethesda and Bioware often succeed. Having been 4 years in development, I cannot see this failing. I would anticipate accolades pushing it to the very top of the tree now.

I already own the original two, so will inevitably go back again! You have to disclaimer by saying if you're not into retro isometric turn based stuff just don't bother. Times they are a-changing.

I'm sure fallout 4 will be good fun and a success. I just hope it captures the atmosphere of the originals better than F3 did. Fallout 3 just felt like a reskined Oblivion. And the alchemists equipment that you saw in your dads lab at minute 3 pretty much confirmed that. I played F3 vanilla and it crashed a lot so I never quite finished it. The other thing about the originals were, they were scary. At least to me they were. You'd enter a new town and the guards could finish you in two seconds due to superior equipment. In f3 I had an assault rifle after 20 min and a sniper rifle in an hour and pretty much invicible ever after. Not one was I scared. The originals had an awesome mix of feeling utter solitude and contrasting feeling claustrophobic once you entered the different communities with all their bizarre rules and regulations.

Can't really compare (directly) fallout 1/2 vs FO3/4 very very different games ..Both are damn good ...in their own way (avoiding the arguement that the shift in gaming ethos in FO3 was due to ..consoles and console controllers)

I still play FO 1/2, torment, Baldurs, NWN, JA2, old proper XCOM etc ...periodically, for what they ...ARE (plus ut seems more companies are going back-ish to those types of games ...wasteland 2 ...The new planscape, divine divinity etc)

Same goes for oblivion/FO3 ..take them for what they are ..luckily with elder/FO ..you xan play it as a shooter ..OR ..rpg it more ..which is what I do ..I don't want an assault rifle in the first 6 hours (let alone 20 mins) ..I want to get one when I have starved/explored/ been forced to run away as too tough/ etc etc

I know on this thread I have been banging on about mods and pc gaming ..but I really can't imagine playing games like Elder scrolls or FO3 or 4 ..vanilla..as I ..WANT ..to make it harder, more rpg, add in different methods of making the game harder, remove all the hand holding map icons and radar etc, less ammo available so every bullet counts.. more survival , more exploring ..more atmosphere, more risk etc etc ..

Currently playing Mass Effect 2 again, it's a great game. I'm a fan of this genre and love Skyrim and the previous Fallout games. I still have an Xbox 360, Fallout 4 will make me get the Xbone.

I remove all the indicators on Skyrim to get this effect, I have to find my own way around and there's no aim for my bow.

I've always had problems with frame rate on Skyrim towards the latter stages.

You know mate I had the odd freezing but it never really bothered me. Now Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition I did have alot of problems. The longer you got into the game I would get alot of crashes/frame rate problems. Especially problematic was the Broken Steel expansion.

That's my Skyrim problems down to a T

Still not done the FO3 GOTY. Done the new vegas GOTY which had frame rate problems in the main game but the expansions ran fine(The normal New Vegas runs fine). Got a feeling it's my old PS3 which is the problem as it's an early gen.
