I haven’t seen an F1 car explode in flames for years, that must have been a very slim chance accident. Good news with the outcome.
Horrific to watch it live, and not knowing if he was ok or not for a minutes. Commentators said there is a good chance the Halo saved it from being him that was also seriously injured when the car split in two.
Without the halo he would not have been able to get himself out of the car. It was too hot for the medics to go in. The Halo saved his life. One lucky guy
I don’t think it’s lucky, though I can see why you would say that. It’s the result of decades of improvement in safety standards, both in F1 and in society as a whole. To be honest, as I said above, I was stunned to see any F1 car explode like that, must have been a unique set of circumstances. Just goes to show it’s still a really dangerous sport though. A few years ago Stroll’s rather less dramatic crash would have seen him decapitated, rather than just crawling out of his upturned car.
