I bet Ron was looking nervously at his patio when the whitmarsh rumours came about. Maybe the keys story is a distraction :emoticon-0126-nerd:

Bombshell alert! Ricciardo to Renault according to Dieter Rencken.

    https://www.racefans.net/2018/08/03/daniel-ricciardo-quit-red-bull-f1-team-renault-2019-season/

I thought he might be considering it. If wants a title he needs to be a team leader. The other option being Honda powered car with inevitably favoured Verstappen makes that fairly unlikely. Still, this is a bold move.

Edit: Red Bull confirm his departure. We've got a silly season after all.

The team want to put all their eggs in the Verstappen basket.... I don't blame him for leaving. Just wish it was for a Merc or Ferrari seat.

RBR are losing a top drawer driver there!

I do love a good driver move at the top. Creates ripples all the way down.

Who do Red Bull pick? Sainz or Gasly? Someone more out of left field like Hulk or even Alonso?
I thought Ocon was basically a done deal at Renault. Does he have to stay at whatever remains of Force India? Wasn't Stroll going to buy that seat? Or is Hulkenberg in trouble?
If Sainz goes to Red Bull instead of McLaren is Vandoorne safe now? Or a chance for Norris?
Toro Rosso are growing desperately short of promising RB juniors. Who would replace Gasly? Assuming Norris was meant to replace Hartley.

I'm sure RBR will just rummage through their endless pile of duds to fill the spot.

I wonder if Alonso is now regretting his bitter rants at Honda? If there is anyway back for him, he should be down there offering his services on a pay for point basis on a 1year deal. Gives RB a consolidation year and Alonso one last chance at a title if Honda get it right.

Very bold move, but I suppose at 29 time is starting to tick by for him to get his chance. Verstappen has recovered from his spiral so RBR is his team now. It's a gamble but not a impossible one.

That's big. Dan needs a team of his own and Renault will come good in next few years. Good move.

Sainz will take his place. Just want know what's happening with Ferrari. Think it may be too early for LeClerc. A move to Haas would be good for him.

And then what of Ocon? stay at FI who will be the Mercedes junior team.

I want to see Norris and Russell get seats next year. They are the next big things.

If Merc get Force India then I can see a space for Russell, maybe even Williams. If he wins F2 he'll have to go somewhere and with his talent Mercedes will move mountains to get him a seat

Imo ricciardo just signed off on his career.

Honda red Bull were either going to catch the big two or not so he had a call..... but his call is to go backwards and hope the engine that's never got him close..... will get him there??

    Can't see it.

If nothing else we will finally see where Hulk is at. If the big boys were right not to hire him

It’s a great opportunity for Hulks stock to rise.

I want to see McLaren re build from the ground up and so I’d have loved to see Ricciardo in that team. I completely understand why he’s signed for a works team in the current Formula, dominated by engines and anyone who is a customer is ultimately at a disadvantage, especially time wise since you just react to the manufacturer rather than plan with them in advance.

I think it was his only option really at this point. He does have a way out in 2021. That’s when all sorts is in the air. Vettel and Ham may no longer be at Merc and Ferrari, new manufacturers may be joining, Renault engine deal for McLaren ends, and highly likely Alonso and Raikkonen will both be gone too.

Whilst a lot of this hinges on Red Bull leaning towards Max and hence not giving Dan any confidence, he isn’t a silly boy and he must have sen something particularly interesing about the Renault plan/development.

Something is happening in the back ground in my view. How long is Newey tied to RBR? Adrian has a history of designing top cars with Renault engines in them- would he fancy a crack at a works team given his annoyance at the customer status disadvantage?

Something behind the scenes has given Dan the confidence to make a huge call.

I just hope it’s more than just a promise from Cyril.
