I guess the argument goes along these lines...They have tried Kvyat enough times, albeit he has improved. Guess they are looking to the future and doing a Ferrari (CLC). Was Verstappen ready...No, but they like the outcome and I suspect they hope to achieve the same with Albon.

 

I actually think personally that moving Gasly out of the RBR team was the perfect opportunity to recruit an external driver with a mix of pace and experience. It would be good for Verstappen and good for the team.

Someone like Hulkenberg would be ideal.

I also think Alonso would have been an amazing team mate. The old master and the young superstar- would have made good viewing.

 

What a year it's been for Albon. Wasn't even in the Red Bull driver program this time last year and only got the call-up to Toro Rosso because Dan Ticktum didn't get the superlicence points. Hell of a tough job being teammate to Verstappen, but at least Gasly has set the bar nice and low, just got to beat the McLarens really.

I get promoting him instead of Kvyat. Danil is a known quantity and they'd only be putting him in the seat waiting for someone better to come along, whereas Albon has a lot more potential. Also despite the impressive drive in Germany, he's not had much of a margin to his rookie teammate.

 

My point is the HELMET himself said there would be NO driver changes until the end of the season .

Alonso is a team breaker, that’s the problem. There is so much talent on the horizon at the moment that I just don’t think F1 needs him anymore.

You are right but if they had stated that Gasly would be out after the summer his moral for the last race or 2 would have been rock bottom. He would have had no chance to improve as mentally he would have been destroyed.
Sometimes public statements are not not the whole truth.
I think experience has taught us Helmut does't tell us or the press the truth.

I'm not sure if I would have tried Dannil again. It would be a nice story, promotion, demotion, dropped, re hired, promoted etc....Then again we don't see the data between the 2 TR drivers.

Yes and no. I think they just know very quickly those who can compete at the very top and those who are just okay drivers for the midfield.

It's not just that though is it ?

If you were a RBR or TR driver and had been told " No changes " . How would you feel ?

 

He would argue he does whatever he needs to do to ensure the success of the team. That's his job, not to make friends.

The other view is that the sometimes cut-throat nature of RBR's ethos comes directly from him. I wouldn't fancy him as my boss.

 

I am not saying he is not ruthless , but I cannot abide LIARS .

If he's off to Renault then that's surely to replace Hulk. Unless Mercedes are trying to super curve ball acquire Ricciardo?
