look at this # Event Winners Prize Money 1 La Liga (2014/15) FC Barcelona €140 million 2 Premier League (2014/15) Chelsea €139 million 3 UEFA Champions League (2014/15) FC Barcelona €61 million 4 Ligue 1 (2014/15) Paris Saint-Germain €44.6 million 5 Bundesliga (2014/15) FC Bayern Munich €38.31 million 6 FIFA World Cup (2014) Germany €28.14 million 7 European Championship (2012) Spain €23 million 8 UEFA Europa League (2014/15) Sevilla €8.17 million 9 FIFA Club World Cup (2014) Real Madrid €6.45 million 10 Copa America (2015) Chile €2.67 million 11 FA Cup (2015) Arsenal €2.63 million Now...ok this is out of date by a few years but..... how much more prize money is actually needed to make the FA cup "worth bothering about" For me there are 3 key things a) under strength teams. Change the rules to remove replays if you like. end extra time and go right to pens... This can be a different sort of drama I guess. BUT enforce a very strict rule that clubs who field and under strength team (call that 3 changes that are not proven to be as a result of injury) get either a league points deduction or a real reduction in TV money (make it a record 5 mil fine) b) look VERY seriously at when the prem clubs come into this cup. and when european clubs come into this cup. c) look VERY VERY seriously at obsoleting the league cup. no other major europen league has 3 cups i think. The FA cup could play off when the european trophies are not on imo. If there was only the FA cup team might take this far more seriously When utd were "excused" from the FA cup it was scandalous as they could just as easily have made a rule that if an enlgish team was in such a comp (rare) a bye to 4th round was possible. They came home and could have played 4th round of FA cup! Clubs with ****ty managers (not even the top clubs who would win tie easy) were playing weakened teams. I recall alan pardew being quoted directly as not even wanting to play FA cup then a few years later bullshitting about how special it was when he got to a final. I was delighted he got tonked. Theres cases of teams like i think wolves making 11 changes and fielding a team patently designed to throw the cup. If LFC had have drawn sutton this week.. which we did not.... (fix) we would have played moreno , matip, camacho, origi, sturridge, etc etc etc. thats robbing sutton fans imo. We should be treated to salah and firmino playing sutton just the same. This is why ending league cup and ending replays in cup make sense. less games = less excuse to throw cup. IMO it is sides throwing the ties that devalues the cup.
thats a bit harsh as the top clubs have more important comps to worry about, also most of them don't have half/most of their ****ing players away on pointless int games or important ones occasionally.
I don't think prize money is intended to motivate the top sides. The top sides usually win it despite playing second strings often. Plus, anything on other will be like pocket change to them. The bigger pot would be too encourage lower ranked sides that don't see the point in trying. Teams in lower divisions play second strings if they have the squad to do so. These winning £50m is like winning the lottery!
Only answering the question you have asked and in no way is this suggestion But I reckon add 60mill to that figure and teams will really take it seriously
I agree it's not just utd, I just like to blame them because of, well you know it's them. Global warming, the state of the economy and any aches and pains I have, get blamed on them as well. The biggest thing that did for the cup was opening up the qualification places for Europe down to around 6th . Personally I'd love to win the cup rather than get in the Europa, but a choice between winning the cup and competing in the champs league is a much harder call. On a financial basis, the clubs are always going to target European qualification over the cup.
The money in the prem just over shadows the cup. If your battling against relegation or shooting for top four the cup pales into insignificance, it's just another fixture you could do with out. A chance to pick up an injury, tire players out. The only way to improve its chances is a radical shake up European teams join in round four, significantly more prize money, no replays or extra time. League cup to be completely fazed out, sadly.
It's just a sad indictment of the times, tbh. Once the cup had a glamour of its own, but now that money has become the raison d'etre of football it's just a poor relation.
It's because money is needed to get the biggest stars these days, so to get more money is equated with having the bestestist squad.
but the point is the fa cup is the richest domestic cup on the planet.. . or was then. how much more makes it relevant.... my view is if the effort in europa isn't worth it for 10mil why would fa cup be?
But you asked how much I replied and I hold by that amount (which was 60m) - £169 mil will see them take uber serious though (Though I see and agree with what you are saying)
No league achieve anything near that. outside 2. No domestic cup does either. copa del Rey sees Barca and real ego fest and reserve teams played too. Coppa italia is similar. the reality is the mystique of the fa cup was a 20th century myth and the fa cup is just like any other major leagues cup comp. we just have 2 which is being silly
At great risk of labouring the issue I again totally agree with you However you asked how much, If you offered £200mil then it would be taken serious Its not my fault you didnt set parameters
