It’s a very touching and beautiful song Snaggey. My greatuncle Patrick Keenan was killed on the 26th September 1915 at Crump Farm, Leper in Belgium. I will be remembering him, among other family members tomorrow and Sunday.
Good post mate, but not the last. My great uncle, Thomas Eglon from Consett, was killed at the battle of Tezze, at the very end of the First World War 27th October 1918. He's buried in the British Cemetery at Tezze and in 2017 we became the first relatives to visit his grave. Working class people then, from Consett, didn't leave Durham let alone go to the far side of Italy. The yellow chrysanthemums were what we left for him and his mates.
It's brilliant that you got to visit his grave Smug, my greatuncle Patrick was also a Consett man and is remembered on both the Consett and Blackhill memorials. Have you got his certificate of remembrance from the CWGC site?
No I don't but would love to. Visiting his grave was a minor miracle tbh. We'd driven to Tuscany, to stay at a friend's place, and were well on our way back. A relative, from Chopwell, messaged to say they'd just found his grave so we did a 300 mile detour. We stopped at a garden centre for flowers and the Italian fella said yellow was the right colour for remembrance. We asked for the biggest display he had as we weren't sure when we'd be back. He carefully prepared it then refused to take any payment. As we'd fought against the Italians it was quite a gesture, the whole day was really moving.
I found it earlier Smug, this is his page on the CWGC site, it has a fair bit of information and the Certificate to download. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/640090/t-eglon/ This is a screenshot of the certificate:
That's very kind Snaggey, but I get down occasionally and took pictures a couple of years ago at both memorials
Class. Heard it on the radio the other day, the DJ, "I never thought I'd ever say this, but here's the new song from the Beatles". The band is still so famous, do you think the average person with any of the Beatles Sir names would get sick of hearing "Any relation" when asked their name? lol
