The court was told the Everton fan suffered a punctured lung in the attack on Priory Road, at the junction with Walton Lane. He had attempted to break up an incident involving a female supporter after attending the match himself. After the incident he was discharged from hospital and was reported to be resting at home. Hughes, a warehouseman, faces charges of malicious wounding with intent to cause GBH and possession of an offensive weapon.
