I can fully understand if your faith is diminishing. You won't be alone. From the attendance figures, over the last few years, it appears that the exodus is gathering pace. The reason is obvious - over priced rubbish !
I can also have sympathy for, and empathy with grumpygit. We are a dying breed of supporter whose loyalty to GFC is unquestionable -- however-- even we have our limits --- which, in my case, is not helped by the nonsense I endure from the Mr. Jobsworths that clubs employ -- but, back to the football.......
I used to go to ALL of the away games ( as well as ALL home games. ) In the last couple of years, I have missed an increasing number of AWAY games for various reasons ( usually 'urgent' family medical appointments. ) This season I couldn't travel to Bristol, (watched on ifollow ). I can't go to Shrewsbury or to Portsmouth ( taking family for important hospital appointments. ) --- so, I was looking forward to going to Oxford on Saturday - but what did I get ? -- absolute excrement -- and it wasn't cheap excrement -- ticket was £24, before all other expenses -- let alone the utter waste of my time !
In those circumstances it is very easy to become disillusioned, and to lose faith. It is very easy for people to question their actions on a Saturday afternoon - and to question the waste of money. Very few people have a totally blind faith. More people will give Gills 'a miss', or become more selective about what games to attend........ and when they return - either to home or away games, they have, in recent years, usually been greeted with excrement. This does nothing to restore any 'faith' - and further erodes the loyalty of the fewer remaining fans....... I have always had faith ( up to now ) - but - have always said that football has no right to expect that fans routinely turn out to watch their club, if all they get is excrement or non commitment. You wouldn't put up with it from any other 'retailer.' -- People would simply stop 'shopping', or shop elsewhere ( or shop from home.)
Having missed a few away games for reasons beyond my control, I am beginning to lose my 'faith' in terms of travelling ( even more ) to away games (( bear in mind my 100 mile journey just for home games )). There is a decreasing amount of appeal for such waste of time and money --- for somebody who has GILLS written through the middle of his bones ! - My soul is no longer 'bleeding' if I have to miss an away game -- how much longer before I have no blood left for home games ?
........ and the same principles are there for an increasing number of 'fans' (( of much weaker 'faith,' )) who no longer attend at Priestfield.
We live in a society in which our activities and routine are very different, and social choices and opportunities are more varied - and sophisticated. We will spend time on other 'cultures' - which won't leave us feeling as if we've been robbed of our money.
In saying all of the above, I do realise that it is only explaining why people have lost 'faith' - but my explanation for falling attendance figures are unnecessary.-----and that is something that I can't possibly explain to fans with a totally blind faith.

I won't try to convince anybody what they should think or who they should support, all I can say is that I am enjoying the football more than the last few seasons(not the results) I don't expect the team to be winning the championship this season, equally I don't expect us to go down.

Here it is for me grumpygit....when Steve Evans came to us, putting aside his record, I asked the question WHY?
Now to me, that is a really big question. I went to the open meeting eveing at the Grand Hall or whatever its called, to try and understand the answer to that question, and I will tell you what I found;
I found a group of supporters who certainly did not feel the same as me about his appointment. I found the guy up on stage, influencing the audience with vigor. I even wonder if the first supporter who stood up about his season ticket was a complete and utter set up, to set a positive tone for the rest of the evening.
In fact I felt I had just experienced the Mandela Effect!
That in a previous parallel world, Gillingham supporters looked at our new manager with some disgust - yet now I had been transported through a univeral black hole, and I was now in a place where Mr Evans was our Saviour.
I now read from your kind guidance, that the average weekly player gets paid three times more than the average person in Gillngham, and considering most people in Gillingham are below average in all sorts of ways, it probably equates to 10 times more.
I'm sure you can tell by now, I have my tongue firmly placed in my cheek. However, I've taken my medication today and woke back up in the real world, it's the world that I mentioned at the beginning and that indeed, this is no stage performance at the Grand Arena, but happening for real on the pitch, and filling the supporters with more disgust as every final whistle blows.
As for the answer to why question WHY?........I still haven't found it, but then I never found my way to Hereford and Cardiff, but my new excuse as for a reason why to that, I got lost regarding what parallel I was still in.
Hold up, my lead is being pulled, I think it's alwaysright and pegleg, telling me to come back to the twilight zone, and the world of fantasy...

There are very few people who will bother to dissect the situation in the way that you, grumpygit and I may. People are becoming less patient with bad results. In the main, I agree with grumpygit that the football has been ' better ' this season ! . .... but when bad results are coupled with bad performances, people will remember bad performance & bad result, more than any small general improvement ----- Then you got a whole load more people who won't go to the next game.
Like I have said, people are not loyal -- and will think more than twice before spending a damned sight more money to watch excrement from The Gills, than it costs to subscribe to SKY or / and BT for a whole month.
brb - in the real World, we are NOT fans, we are customers. We are treated by football clubs as customers. We have become accustomed with this situation - and, as customers, we are asking for better value-for-money. Loyalty is a very expensive luxury that very few ( an ever decreasing number ), can afford.
..... as for the appointment of Evans and all his predecessors ( other than Pulis and Allen ) - Mr. Scally has made a dog's dinner of appointing senior staff --- and more dogs dinner ( and by product ), in terms of HR ---- but I don't have the stomach to dissect this subject for the benefit of [mainly], mere customers. ( no disrespect intended to forum members )
