I think I understand Southgate's problem. It's hesitancy. He thinks he's doing the chancey and smart thing by not changing, by picking the stalwarts. He thinks he's been outsmarting world football for the last three tournaments. But in reality, it's fear. He is afraid to make blindingly obvious choices, like playing players in form, playing players in the right positions, making subs when things clearly aren't working. He manages based on fear.
I honestly think it's best if we're knocked out now. England fans don't deserve to have their time wasted on this crap.
