The three European sides are making steady progres. Russia picked up 4 pionts from their two games, with Croatia and Germany both picking up a win and a loss. The Croats suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat in the Cape Verde Islands, having previously hit 8 past Samoa. In Group C Germany were beaten 2-0 in Jamaica, but came back from that with an 11-0 drubbing of Vanuatu to top the group on goal difference.

In Group A, a clearly jetlagged weakened Argentina side were humbled by New Caledonia (world ranking 95) in Nouméa. Meanwhile in Group C the website seems to have got wind of the new England set up, as the three lions suffered a second succesive deeat, this time at home to Uruguay.
In Group D, world champions Spain sufered a 2-1 reverse in Ghana and in Group E Brazil suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat against the socceroos.

At the halfway stage of the first group phase Russia are a good bet, four points clear at the top of Group A. The Cape Verde Islands are the surprise package in Group B and Group C looks like a real dog-fight.

The top 3 from each group qualifyand are joined by the sides finishing 3rd in the Champions League Groups. We will have 3 groups of 5, with the top 2 and best 2 3rd placed sides going into the quarter finals.

With two games left Argentina will be confident of qualification from Group A and can’t finish below 3rd. In Group B USA finish with home games against Colombia and Nigeria so could still qualify. It would take an incredible run of scores to prevent Uruguay qualifying from Group C, although it is mathematically possible, although they’re guaranteed at least a Worldopa spot. In Group D Ghana just need a point, but their next game is away to Spain, who would qualify if they win. Groups E & F could swing either way, although you’d be brave to bet against Mexico qualifying
