Southgate will go with a back five
I was thinking that earlier. Rice and Philips to sit on Kroos and Gundogan, Shaw and James or Walker to keep Gosens and Kimmich quiet, then three at the back to deal with Müller, Gnabry and Sane. Leave the four up top to try and score with a bit of magic, or finally score from a set piece.

I can ser Germany raising their game for this. I can't at the moment really see much more from England than keep it tight and try and nick a goal on the counter.

A mate at footy told me Southgate had said we'd go with a back five if we faced France.

We have such a good squad, I honestly believe we don't have to play at our very best to beat Germany.

Getting out of 2nd gear into 3rd would help though. Sad thing is I don't see it happening.

The only hope we have is that the expected "Southgate counter-attack approach" he'll no doubt set England up to play actually pays off.

And if it does, it won't be because of the way Southgate's set us up, it'll be because of the individual brilliance of one or two players to pull it off.

For the rest of the 90 mins I expect it to be a backs to the wall performance.

agreed. It rests with Southgate….so we’ll be out. I have zero confidence in the man.

interesting last 16 games now.

Wales V denmark
Italy V austria
Netherlands v Czech republic
Belgium v portugal
Croatia V Spain
France v switzerland
England v Germany
Sweden v ukraine

Some red hot favourites and some that could go any way.

the QF will be:

France/Swiss V croatia/spain (st petersburg)
Belgium/portugal v Italy/Austria (Munich)

Netherlands/Czech V Wales/denmark (baku, terrible place to go ffs)
Sweden/Ukraine V England/Germany (Rome)

The SFs are split per above.

there is certainly a really tough side and a not so tough side to the draws.

France/spain V Belgium/portugal/Italy on one side
Netherlands (hot favourites imo) v England/germany

I could see England getting to pens with netherlands 100%.
We can beat sweden or ukraine (ought to at least)
So this all boils down to getting past germany. Pens? not with pickford in goals. we need to get someone running past hummels over the top.

I'd assumed it was Germany but it looked ropey there for a while.

Germany have been quite mixed and leaky at the back so England have to hope for a solid game and hit on break.

My Sweden hopes are still alive after they did top the group there after the late goal. They play a 3rd place side after a draw I think so that now opens up this side of the draw.

England can grind this out, but they have to get past Germany.
.
I've got Sweden in the sweep <grr>

Totally agree.

Looking for an error from germany or ball over top at sterling who cant hit the target.

Kane stood round waiting for a pen.
