I genuinely don't know what to expect. I'll normally happily write us off completely against Germany but as I mentioned the other day I think this is the best chance we'll get of beating them in a major tournament ko match. I don't think it's quite a 50/50. But it's as close to it as this fixture has been in a long long time.
I mean, would you be if you were a Portsmouth fan? Though I'll try to be optimistic, though it doesn't come naturally to me.... We might score one goal, maybe?
Agreed, the Portugal match was quite a turn up - Outside of that their form over the last few years is probably the weakest it has been since reunification. I think Hansi Flick will turn them into a top force again, so it’s now or never really. Id still say they are slight favourites though.
From a Saints perspective, the only current player still involved in the tournament is Vesty, for Denmark. So if (OK, when) Wales beat Denmark, all of our players will have a nice break before reporting back for pre-season training. This could be seen (by me, anyway) as a win-win situation, where we can still support England, who will go all the way (probably), knowing that Saints players are wrapped up in cotton wool, in the first team drawer at Ralph's house. We've even got the added frisson of saying "Ings/Prowsie would've got that", whenever an England player misses a chance, or fails with a free kick.
Yeah there are advantages to this, although I reckon Denmark could get up to the Semis. Imo they are better than Wales and the Czech Republic. They are also more consistent than The Netherlands.
Disagree with this. The weakest period for Germany was by far 2000 - 2004. Failed to qualify from the group stage of both Euro 2000 and 2004. Incredibly they got to the final of the 2002 World Cup, but they had a very fortunate run of fixtures in the knockout stages (Paraguay - USA - S. Korea). It was the same team that we beat 5-1 in qualifying. The current German squad contains a load of Bayern Munich players (Neuer, Kimmich, Gnabry, Sane etc), and Bayern have been arguably the best club team in the world for the last few years. They also have half a dozen or so players who won the WC in 2014 (Neuer, Hummels, Kroos, etc)
Wales looking good! This will be a close game. Could easily be another tournament where Wales get further than England.
Delaney is playing like he’s already joined us - everything backwards, and largely off target. Perfect!
I am torn between wanting Vesty to play well, and wanting Wales to win. From a selfish perspective, I would be happy if Vesty scores a hat trick, is given MoTM, but still ends up on the losing side, preferably after Hojberg misses a penalty.
