And look at that German team in the final: Matthaus, Brehme, Rummenigge, Voller et al. Maradona's performance against Belgium in the semi-final should be played to all budding footballers. Perfection.
Shilton Stevens Fenwick Butcher Sanson Hoddle Reid Steven Hodge Lineker Beardsley. Englands starting 11 against Argentina. What a team. Ffs they had Woods, Waddle, Wilkins and Barnes on the bench. Aye Toby the players of today are far better
He was a maniac. People are used to wall to wall blown out of all proportion coverage these days. I'd actually put Zidane up with Messi and Ronaldo easily. But we'll behind oor Diego
So aren't the defenders Messi and Ronaldo are playing against also more athletic than the defenders Maradona was playing against? All I know is Messi and Ronaldo are a lot more dominant over the players of this era than Maradona was over the players of his era. They are getting like 50+ goals a season every year, the likes of Maradona or any other player from the past could only dream of those numbers. They are both on another level to any other footballer before them. If they weren't around in the same era, 1 of them would probably have like 8 Ballon Do'rs and there would be no arguments who was the greatest player of all time.
Zidane was a great player, but anyone with even half a brain knows, that over a full season Messi and Ronaldo offer a lot more for their teams than Zidane ever did.
You are having laugh right? Was Paul Robinson better than Peter Shilton? Was Gary Neville better than Gary Stevens? Was John Terry better than Terry Butcher? Micheal Owen better than Lineker? Ashley ****ing Cole better than Beardsley? Away ye go ya crackpot.
Il give you the goalkeeper, but the 98 Goalkeeper Seaman was pretty good too. Gary Neville was twice the player of Gary Stevens. Neville was a player who played at the highest level playing in Champions League winning sides. He didn't play Sunday league stuff up in Scotland. You're losing all credibility using that one as an example. Terry Butcher was very good, but I wouldn't say he was any better than Terry or Sol Cambell. Adams was better than Butcher, and Ferdinand was head and shoulders above him. Michael Owen was very good in his prime, wether he was better than Lineker I'm not so sure. But I am sure that Shearer and Rooney at their best where better forwards than Lineker. Not even sure why you are comparing Ashley Cole and Beardsley, when one was an attacking midfield player and the other a left back. Cole was regarded as the best left back in the world by most pundits for a period of his career, so not sure how you can knock the guys ability, even if he is a bellend. If you want to compare Beardsley to a player who played a similar position to him, then let's compare him to Scholes. Need I say anymore?
Football is a results business, and for me Messi and Ronaldo will gain more points/victorys for their teams over a full season than Maradona would. So for me they are better, wether they are more entertaining to watch is another debate entirely.
You also have to compare the players around them. Look at Barcelona and Madrid. Then look at the teams Diego dragged to the winners enclosure.
