+ or - 10 years! As a reserve striker, for a reasonable wage, you could have done a lot less than Eto'o. He may be past his peak- but his name will bring a lot of brand recognition to Everton. As we discussed on the Liverpool forum- I think it's a big thumbs up to Everton. He's a big name, even if he's past his peak, he was at one point one of the biggest names in football. For him to go to Everton is a bit of a coup... it shows that Everton is a decent name in his opinion. Stars like him usually go to somewhere like the middle east or the US- where they can still be a big fish and get big money... or to a fading brand club like Ajax... formerly big teams that might not be at the same level they once were. For Everton to be a target for Eto'o shows that Everton has got a bit of their brand image back... and having players like Eto'o might attract other big names to the club who are perhaps more "current".
I agree, and the reason he chose us was Martinez. He had offers from Italy and beyond, but took to Martinez and decided he wanted to work with him. He's not the first arrival to say the same thing either, the man is transforming our club, in more ways than one.
He is always going to be younger than The Yak, in fact maybe The Yak is his dad! What pulling power Roberto has, Barry, Lukaku and now Eto'o all would have had offers and they have chosen to come to Goodison. As The RS said, it brings the name of Everton FC to a much wider audience and shows how much players want to play for Bobby. Baines has even said today he wants to spend the rest of his playing days at Goodison. Good times ahead, who knows. But it is a massive step change from signing Ginola and Gazza under Smith
Totally agree. I think the Eto'o signing combined with our EL campaign this season, will combine to improve our standing across the continent. Who knows it might be the catalyst for an interested party to come forward to buy the club. Not having that mural on the side of the main stand though...
Good signing ,as well as his goals he will put his foot in when needed ( remember big bad suarez at the bridge )
Has also announced his retirement from International football. So will not be jetting away for the ACON
Heard that Gibbo might be on his way out. I'd be disappointed if true, albeit his injury record is poor.
Gibson on his way out! Not sure why he would be seen as surplus to requirements by the manager, maybe he want's to move on
If the offer is right for him or the club? If he is on his way out then we need more players in, this could be a deadline day starter for our last minute deals.
A bit of both. He knows he's going to be a squad player behind McCarthy and Barry and Martinez is interested in Diame who has a release clause about £3.5m
Proved he's still got it yesterday, 2 fine goals and a great all round performance. He's still got hunger for the game and that's brilliant to see. Inspired signing and a pleasure to watch in the Blue shirt
He gave a masterclass in complete forward play. His hold up, positional play and movement with and without the ball were all amazing.....great secong goal also. A great player to have about the place
So ****ing annoying that I was getting laughed at when I said we should sign Eto'o over Balotelli. It was a ****ing **** choice between the two but it was clear to me that only one of those two would put any sort of effort in, and he was a lot cheaper too (not sure about wages though)
Just to make that worse, we're reportedly paying him £50k per week..........compared to Balotelli's £125k..... He'd have been a better fit in terms of his style of play, as he actually moves! can pass the ball with aplomb as well as being able to hold it up brilliantly in the central strikers position. The fact that Lukaku is going toget to spend 2 years with one of the best strikers of modern times can also only benefit us, as he himself said yesterday. You f**ed up there mate, big time.
Even if Balotelli is on less than the reported £125k a week it is more than double what he is worth. Part of his wage demands woul dbe a throwback from his City days.....but also Rodgers desperate attempt to lure him to Anfield. I couldn't believe our luck when we got him signed up, his performance showed you dont need lightening pace when you are too good to mark. Much like Barry, neither players game is based on speed - not sure barry ever based his on speed - and are passing on much needed experience to our young squad while keeping us competing at the top of the table for minimal outlay. All down in my opinion to Martinez, Moyes got in Neville who at the time was the right player....now we get in a better quality senior player to move us on again. And to think we once signed GHazza and Ginola
