Newcastle down the vetch 61 ish standing behind the goals on the east terrace - front row next to the railings - can't remember being anything other than a Swans fan - that was in the days when the players were really regular guys - nothing special no big money used t o love standing around the players entrance after the game getting autographs - in those days we really had a fortress Vetch - we won 90% of our home games - and lost 95% of our away !!
My first game was, I think 1975/6, Harry Griffiths last season in charge, we lost at home to Bradford 2-3. Can't remember much about the game, I think Jeremy Charles scored one of our goals. That season we just missed out on promotion, loosing our last home game 1-4 to Watford. I can remember walking out of that game, tears streaming down my face. Mind you, I was only 12 years old at the time. My last game was that never to be forgotten game against Hull. Three months later, I moved to the Philippines. At least now that we're in the premier league, I can see some of the Swansea games on Fox Sports/Star Sports channels.
I remember the Bradford game, it was quite a signifficant game in the sense that it was a rearranged fixture. The first game was on an atrocious Friday night. We were winning 1-0 and after Bradford missed a penalty they had a further chance to equalise but 'Cooke' missed a great opportunity and for the next ten mins thats all he did was complain to the ref about the conditions. Eventually, the ref consulted his linesmen and abondoned the match with 20 mins to play. In the rearranged fixture the game was evenly poised at 2-2 with about 10 mins to go when Bradford broke down the wing (North bank side attacking the west stand) and the ball was crossed in to find ......yep, you guessed it COOKE! Bang! 2-3! But what made it so signifficant was yes we did miss out on promotion that year, to Bradford, by 2 points!
. I can remember walking out of that game, tears streaming down my face. Mind you, I was only 12 years old at the time. Bloody hell thats no shame i find myself with tears down my face today, tears of joy now though..
Just after we lost to Minehead, I had not heard of Minehead so this made me angry and my passion was born and we had a few good years after that. First game I went to was when they played Haverfordwest County
Thats another one I remember! Lost 0-1 in the FA Cup. Tall lanky guy scored the winner, he used to play for us and was utter gash, Andy something. Anyway more importantly, I was at the game with my girlfriend (kids at the time), and my parents were also at the game. After he scored we left and went back to my house (no one in), and it was then I had my first feel of tit!
My first 2 games were at the end of the 1965/66 season - Peterboro and Brighton both at home and both draws - when I was 8 years old and my father took me. Jack Taylor reffed one of those games.
