castro, There are plenty of examples of why changing a manager, when things are not working, does work, just look up the road at them there budgies!! Struggling at start of season, got rid fairly early and then got promoted, CASE RESTED!! For me, mick has to go, shock horror!!
Look at it like this though: 1) Sacking McCarthy will cost us millions in compensation. 2) In my opinion, the current squad is not composed or capable enough to play the style of football we all like to see, particularly in defence. 3) The last few years show that Evans is reluctant, at best, to spend money on players. The new man is presumably going to have to work under the same financial restrictions as MM, who we all acknowledge had us overachieving last season. If we're taking a financial hit getting rid of McCarthy, then money is less likely to be available.
MM has hit the same brick wall that he did with Wolves and Sunderland. Once teams suss him out he hasn't got the technical nouse to turn things around and mix the style of play up. His constant changing of the team, with the exception of our p**s poor defence show's he's panicking. He peaked last year and we are now on the slippery slope. Rather than suffer a slow decline I wish ME would put him out of his misery quickly. Who would I replace him with? I don't know. What I do know is we won't get promoted with him in charge. Football has moved on dramatically in the relatively short time since he got Wolves and Sunderland promoted.
Of course I'm not going to advocate blindly sticking with McCarthy, if our poor form continues. If we're not challenging for promotion, then something will surely have to give. I just think October is far too early to make that decision, particularly if we want to replace him with a completely different type of manager. Spanish, you, and several others, have a valid point when it comes to the style of football we play. It's not entertaining to watch, particularly when we aren't winning or scraping bore draws against sides we should, on paper, be beating. In fact, it's our current style of football, and most notably the cost, which are two of the reasons why I no longer have a season ticket. Traditionally, we've played 'attractive football', but we've also traditionally given managers time and faith. My main concern is what's the practicality in firing McCarthy? It'll cost a lot of money. Money that, if the board are to be believed, we don't have. And if we did, I'd prefer it be invested in the team rather than giving McCarthy a golden handshake. Also, why would we sack our most successful manager since Joe Royle this early? It seems some people forget we achieved a play off place last season. It seems some people forget we made a very positive start to our campaign. I cannot understand how anyone can argue that McCarthy has been a bad manager for us (apologies if you're not inferring that). I believe that any new manager should take over during, or very near, a transfer window. That way he can begin to implement his ideas, sell players he wants to offload, and bring in players he wants. And let's be honest, this is a squad that will struggle to adapt to a different style of play. Ideally, to play the type of football we want, we'll have to use the transfer market. I don't think you can't build a squad, that aims to play attractive, on-the-ground football, by relying on cast-offs from other clubs and loanees. You can try, but there needs to be ambition on a financial level, as well as an on-the-field level. Look at the sides that go up playing good football, they have those factors in common.
Sure if the manager's also lost the dressing room but I don't think that's the case. He deserves a chance to get us out of this rut anyway.
If a bright new manager was promised funds to invest in quality in areas that we're lacking that would be one thing but it's not the case. If Mick lost the players confidence in him, then I'd agree.
" As opposed to sticking with MM and his dreadful football with no investment ? " Problem with this Yorkie, McCarthy's got results the start of this season, all of last season, the season before, and the bit when he took over with no investment. The "style of play" is also NOT how I like the game played - I like it the Royle way, expansive and exciting as hell. However what I will say, is results > style of play for me any day of the week. Issue McCarthy is going to have with us, over many other managers is when we lose, and hit a sticky patch due to the play, people are going to wonder where the next wins coming from and go a lot more over the top quickly. If anyone seriously think we're in with a chance of a relagation battle with McCarthy incharge I would honestly recommend seeing a doctor. That's never going to be the case, it wasn't the case when he took us over from bottom of the league the rest of that season either. It's certainly not going to be this. Next four games, all four are VERY winnable. I'll review my thoughts more after then but I'm hopeful we can turn it.
Fair enough Westy, but are you going to put your money where your mouth is and bet on us WINNING not losing??
I have Saturday at Forest yes - sorry but if I think we'll lose a game I'll put my ££££ on that also. I do matched betting and the Hull to beat us was part of a £10 free bet thanks to sky, just didn't fancy us the other night and sadly I was right. Done a mini Forest article - be interesting to see what the rest of you think.
Disagree with us not having the players to play better football Nuggets. I think it's more to do with the coaching and the instructions that are given to the players, and obviously ours are told to be more conservative.
In terms of our attacking players, I agree we have the potential to play good football. However, the likes of Chambers and Smith have never looked that composed on the ball. Coaching them to play an alternative way would help, but I think for a few players that transition is going to be a gradual process, at best.
Westy, I think you will find MM has been in a few relegation battles, so dont quite get your comment!! Mick out!!
Can you remind me of the relagation battles he's had in the championship please? I recall him winning the league with Wolves, play offs us, play offs Millwall, play offs Sunderland and champions Sunderland. It's laughable to think whether people like Mick or not we're going to be in the bottom three this season.
Nobody said the championship i just said he has been in relegation battles and to say its laughable is a rediculous statement, as anybody can go down!! Personally i think we would be ok but thats not the point, everybody kept saying as long as we improve year on year....... That aint gonna happen, not unless the dinosaur changes things!!
