Played better than Wellbeck, who i couldn't believe was described by Nick the tash on Sky Sports a moment ago as having a "brilliant game against Honduras" You what?!

I beg to differ. Created what should have been a goal for Sturridge and was more disciplined than Lallana in staying on his wing and tracking back (and was stronger against the physicality of the Hondurans). You can see why Hodgson would consider him a safe pair of hands for the opening game.

Well, if we go with "safe pairs of hands" we won't make it out of the group state.

As I say, for the opening game, against a dangerous Italy side in the heat and humidity of Manaus, I can understand that choice. I wouldn't necessarily advocate it for the other games.

Are Italy dangerous? Watched a bit of their friendly last night and their defence was bloody awful. Might not be the first choice, but gaps all over the place, couldn't hold a straight line and weak at set pieces.

Think England's best tactic, knowing our defence, is to attack

Italy have been shocking ever since they secured qualification, but knowing them they'll step it up ten gears and reach the last 8 as per usual.

They're not at their best, but yes of course they're dangerous. I agree our best option is to take the game to them but it's never that simple.

The trouble with Wellbeck is that he has the 1st touch of a pinball machine. Plenty of good solid running and nuisance making, but he kind of reminds me of Bret Ormerod

There is that side to him but he's been very effective for England over the last two or three years. You get the impression Hodgson has a lot of trust in him.

Welbeck is a good impact sub and that's how I would use him.

I don't understand the problem with Welbeck, he was one of our best players in the Euros, and in the WC qualifying.
