Struggle to comprehend the inclusion of Smalling who has been woeful for club and country since i can remember.

I think a few red and white tinted specs for Bertrand. Yes he has been very good for Saints and is a solid player, but i'd take Shaw back without much hesitation. Gibbs i'd put on a par with Ryan and although i've not been impressed with Baines in an England shirt he is still contributing to Everton in a positive way.

Agree with some that Lambert selections are a puzzle. Is he there for Kelvin Davis style morale? I have faith that he could have a positive effect for England and Liverpool if used correctly, but both are wasting him as some Mascot.

On a side note I watched Maribor play Chelsea last night. Stoijanovic (think thats the spelling) who played right back for Maribor and I think I saw being linked to Saints looked very good. Incredibly composed in possession and always looked like he had time on the ball, got forward well at every opportunity. Strong and no slouch either. I assume he will be in the Slovenian squad and will be one to keep an eye on.

Bertrand is a better defender then Shaw at present. He also seems to link up going forward better then Shaw. But Shaw is young and will probably end up better. What is rose tinted about that?

St George's Park is supposed to be state of the art...do they analyse potential England players the way Saints do or is it basically selection by manager's whim? Once you are in it seems a player is hard to shift in the manager's mind...despite evidence on the pitch. Rickie's selection is partly due to that, but also partly due to the dearth of England strikers.

I do think the FA could take lessons from Saints, on methods of selection and recruitment. Whether Saints would give out the secret is another matter. If it meant Saints lost their hard won edge, if the FA came to call, I'd tell them what to go and do with themselves.

I agree with Beefy. Bertrand is better in every way than Shaw is at the moment (or last year) he is a better defender, better going forward and much more aware of things. Shaw has potential but I think we all got carried away with the hype and the fact that he was a mile better than Fox.

As for hard to shift players. Townsend? How many premier league minutes? Lambert the same.

You have to remember that this is a manager who is building a side..............around Jack Wilshere................as a deep lying playmaker........... :emoticon-0137-clapp

Here are the stats for both Luke and Ryan for anyone:

Luke : http://www.whoscored.com/Players/118244
Ryan: http://www.whoscored.com/Players/22846

Stats suggest a slight advantage for Ryan but i'll leave it for everyone else to draw conclusions.

Shaw had something about him. The way he could just accelerate past a player was bloody impressive and, although his stats for assists weren't great, he was took a great deal of stopping which created space for others around him. His inclusion in the team of the year was a mightily impressive feat and shows how tough players (and managers) found it to defend or attack against him last year. Bertrand has done brilliantly to at least match Shaw's exploits last year

Roy complaining about American football being played at Wembley a few days before an important England game. The problem is the need to reclaim the vast sums spent on the stadium....England now taking second place. They should be honest and admit that Wembley is no longer the home of the national side and take some of the matches on the road (which I believe is a plan anyway). Shame as Wembley has always been associated with England, but if the pitch is ruined they would be better at Old Trafford.

Also, we should be honest and admit that American Football is far more entertaining than the dull-fest of the england teams where players walk in based on who they play for. When was the last time there was an england game as exciting as the Falcons - Lions match?

Er, what?

After the last England game I thought about complaining to Wembley Stadium for their allowing the unmitigated piece of crap that is the England team to mar the appearance of that magnificent arena.

Side issue, but I see the England U21s are the highest ranked team in the European Championship. Good to see the youngsters doing well. Hope for the tournament...hell no...the best players will be withdrawn and we will lose to a country that cares more. About time the FA learnt that winning a major tournament would do wonders for confidence.

It's OK, JWP will be there, he'll sort things out whoever else is involved.

I could learn the rules if I wanted to, but the best games have the simplest rules. Football is so popular around the world because one person with a ball or ball-shaped substitute can practice the game....no expensive equipment needed.
