Interesting posts regarding national anthems. I think they are fine for medal ceremonies in athletics and we all share in the ahtlete's joy at winning their medal. As for a football match ......ummm!!! If we are to have a debate about a more suitable one than the present one, how about John Lennon's "All You Need is Love." Having said this it might be appropriate to play before, during and after any match between matches involving the Balkan Nations, Turkey, Greece and Italy!!!

From what I read the band weren't 'encouraging' an anti IRA song. They were playing a song and fans chose to sing an alternate version or something.

TBH I thought most of last night was good banter.

    My personal favourites were:

Rule Britannia (met by a chorus of boos)

Cheer up Gordon Strachan, oh what can it mean, to a Scotland supporter and a s**te football team.

Considering we are talking about Scotland and Celtic Park it says something when you can hear the England fans.

Anyway why were the band encouraging the fans to sing 'Oh Gaston Ramirez'

The main thing is that it went off peacefully...I was afraid that playing at Celtic Park (with their history of sectarianism) would cause a riot and this match would never be played again. Everyone behaved like grown ups (apart from a few songs...and isn't that generally part of football).

Apologies if already posted but apparently the ITV crew were offered stab vests by their Health and Safety staff. <laugh>

    Exactly, Fran!

Apparently, some people (Guardian journalist on R5) were offended by the triumphalist nature of the England fans' singing, when we were winning! Football fans, triumphalist? Shocking! Whatever next?<laugh> What planet do these killjoys live on?

Now, now. Be careful; you might provoke someone into posting the "Horst Wessel".......or worse, the National Anthem!

I don't think anybody should be apologising for anti IRA songs. I don't give a teeny tiny **** about the feelings of anyone who makes a habit of killing British citizens, or those that support them.

You see what I mean now by Guardian reading apologists. They support anyone who loves their country...apart from the English. Britian is one of the most tolerant countries around and people are getting a bit fed up with being told we are not....go and live in the Middle East and then come back and criticise. Can't remember the last time I cut someone's throat for converting to another religion or imprisoned a woman for watching a sports match.

    And breathe......

I used to read the Manchester Guardian when I was a young and innocent man. It gradually changed and I stopped reading it when I realised that it had replaced "Spare Rib" as a feminists must read. I read the Telegraph for a while because its sport was so good but I detested the political slant. I then tried the Independent which was OK until they appointed Janet Street-Porter as an editor. I then abandoned all my principles and started reading the Times. This has been so dumbed down that it is unbelievable. Now I just listen to the wireless and let us be honest Radio 4 and Radio 5 really do take some beating. Newspapers and their journalists can all rot in hell as far as I am concerned.

    Good one :emoticon-0148-yes:

The 'God' in GSTQ doesn't necessarily refer to the God of Christianity. 'God' is a concept that anyone can relate to, regardless of faith (or lack of). Jerusalem's lyrics, on the other hand, are too overtly Christian

I wonder if Qatar will have alcohol available in the 2022 World Cup. After all, we offer halal meat.

Although of course the actual city of Jerusalem is regarded as a holy city by Jews, Christians, and Moslems alike, which you could argue is a unifying idea.

Qatar imported $1.4 million worth of beer in 2013, so I would guess it's available already.

Of course. Though it's hardly a unifying city at the moment... It was more the lines citing the Holy Lamb of God and overall reference to Christ's visit to England that I had in mind.

Anyway, this is a football forum. That's enough Religious Studies for today.

Of course they will. They'll have Budweiser as a sponsor too.
