Woy trying to defend England scrapping past a 3rd tier team
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29063269

    here's may favourite bit;
"The bottom line is this - before the World Cup with the euphoria, we are getting 75,000 people to see us play Peru, who, with respect, were nowhere near as difficult as an opponent as we have played in Norway," continued the England boss.

"And now we have 40,000 to see us play against a much more difficult opponent. I can't put that right because I can't turn the clock back, but what I can do is analyse what I have seen and judge that through my eyes and not judge it because someone is going to tell me you know, 'well, you only had two shots at goal' - because for me, that is not right."

Peru are one place above Norway in the rankings, so how are Norway a more difficult team? Woy should just admit he wanted a more conservative tactic cause he he doesn't know any different and has backed himself into a corner by meaning he has to play Rooney every game despite form.

  2. Pick a competitive (by which I mean not a friendly) England game and compare the line up to what you would consider to be our current strongest eleven. Vast majority of the old team will be deemed better.

I actually agree about the "team" point but that's where I then point at the manager

I agree with both sections. England have have far stronger man for man team and squads and the point on manager is true too which is why everyone may agree this easy group means England will qualify with lots of average result v lesser teams then go home at groups again

Maybe, but that wasn't my point. All the players in the team (with the possible exception of RB) are, objectively, players that you would at least classify as being "good" players, if not necessarily exceptional or world class players (obvously such a grading system is subjective, but I hope you get the point). Man for man, they're better players than the majority of national teams, and better than several teams that got out the group stages. They just don't work together well enough. At the end of the day, are we really saying that, man-for-man, Costa Rica are better than us? And yet it's clear which team was better at the World Cup.

    Fixed (according to Ziggy).

Happy birthday to her in advance! Is she celebrating at the Cheese?

That **** never got anywhere near her.

She's coming round to mine on Monday evening, so we'll probably go for a drink. She'll be nailed by her mother on her birthday. They're going to 'the Bistro' in Stockton Heath. She'll have a better time getting stoned with me on Monday <laugh>

  12. Fair enough, it seems I misinterpreted what you was previously saying.

I agree with what you just said. Of you want to categorise teams than I'd say England are a second tier nation. The first tier would be the nations expected to win trophies, second being the outsiders.

As you say, we have good players but no world beaters (hoping Sterling changed this in a couple of years though). The poorest part of our setup is the manager.

PS... At RB, we have the Scouse Cafu. Just need to use him :)

Agreed. We shouldn't be favourites for the cup or anything, but we should reach the quarters. We consistently qualify well for tournaments (how many qualifiers have we lost since the 1-0 at the old Wembley? Not many), and can also give a good account of ourselves in friendlies. We just can't beat other decent nations in tournaments, and mostly play dire, uninspriring football.

You're confusing Ziggy with Zingy. Zingy is all mouth and no trousers, who - when it comes to it - chickens out, legs it to Croatia and has sex with his brother.

Ziggy is a hero amongst women. All hail Ziggy!

  15. Should being the key word here. I think that is the expectation IF we had the right guy in charge. With Roy (again, I don't dislike him, he's just not good enough) in charge I don't expect anything bar qualifying for the Euro finals. I only expect that because of how easy qualifying seems; fairly easy group and top two qualify plus the best third placed teams.

We seem to be pretty much in complete agreement on this. Which is nice. Close the thread and let's have a cuppa.

He's a ****. I can't beleive a man of his experience can be so blind. It's laziness or cowardice.

Shawcross had Man City's billion pound attack in his pocket, but no lets call up the horrendously out of form Jagielka and Chambers with his 3 Arsenal appearances. Joke.

Rooney was totally useless but couldn't be subbed until he scored his stat-building penalty. After that England played so much better but will that ever enter into Roy's mind? Of course not, he doesn't make football decisions he makes marketing decisions and right now all the FA cares about is getting Rooney to break some meaningless records so they can put his face on overpriced tat.

Shawcross? It's that bad I suppose jones or shawcross... Smalling should even get a letter as to why he's dropped!

Chambers is a bit of a joke, Southampton no chance move to arsenal get in press auto pick

The whole Rooney thing is to get him bobby charltons record by scoring pen and v lesser league one opposition while England flounder utterly

I agree with Greez. I don't hate Woy, he's just not good enough. He's a decent mid-table manager for a club with no greater ambition than continued survival in the top league.
He just doesn't have what it takes for a top club or an international team of England's (supposed) standing.

Rather than close it then, why don't we merge it with that thread... although, we'd need to rename the title so it didn't say the cricket thread! <whistle>
