    I quite agree.

The French havent handled it well, and they rarely handle football fans well. Local youths have targeted England / club (especially spurs fans) in the past few years.

I wouldn't be surprised that some of the England fans felt hard done by from the night before with the heavy tactics. It was quoted by a chairman of a supporters club (something like that) that the polices' tactics was a tad over the top.

From what I can tell last night, the police in full riot gear were just there waiting. Idiots get drunk, and goad the police. Police move in slightly and people decide to throw bottles.
If the police sat back a bit, there may have been no hassle last night. It's like hanging a string in front of a drunk kitten.

I'm also trying to find a universal site for the euros, as British papers will only post about British teams unless there's a war between other fans.

Whatever side he picks, he'll be slaughtered before they even kick a ball.

Just like Alf Ramsey was. "Not playing Jimmy Greaves? What's wrong with the idiot?" etc.

    yeah, all the police's fault.

How about fans go to a tournament, have a couple of drinks, enjoy themselves, watch some football and most importantly, know how to behave. A line of policemen in riot gear does not justify someone throwing bottles. How about, "don't throw bottles" and don't goad the police. If the lads can't behave whilst drinking, don't go drinking.

Sorry, but the above post sounds like a justification of thuggish behaviour. There is no justification.

No justification for drunken thuggery, certainly. But in the interest of balance, it is worth pointing out that a) the French police are notoriously heavy handed, more so than possibly any other force in Europe, and b) I'm not sure I trust our own media to report impartially and accurately on the real sequence of events.

There were pictures on last night's late news showing some appaling behaviour by some English fans. I wouldn't try and justify that. But I very much doubt that's the whole story. For instance, which came first, the violence or the tear gas? I've seen les flics in action on the news before (and up close), including against Parisian youths, striking trade unionists etc. It's not the German police who regularly invite comparisons to the gestapo.

    Haha! As usual.

Not blaming the police, I think they should have deployed a less antagonising tactic. Surely when you go out and you see drunk lads? Do you walk up to them staring? If so, you're different to most. You take a different option to avoid confrontation.

I didn't feel I had to chat about the fans, as I quoted saints alive regarding the thick **** fans that are out there causing trouble. Obviously not all the fans are causing trouble.

The instant I see that, I think "give me a bottle to throw"

    Not

I wonder why they are there?

I think "couldn't they keep the riot gear in vans round the corner til they need it?" Like you'd expect anywhere else in Europe.

The French would probably police the Notting Hill carnival dressed up like that. Then wonder why they have so much tension on the streets.

My point though is there shouldn't be the need for "the balance"

Yes, the French police have a reputation, but don't our fans?

No matter what, my view will be frowned upon, because I find the behaviour disgusting. I sit here watching it on the news and I ask myself what I would do in that situation. The answer is the same each time. I'd get the hell out of there. I wouldn't start looking for missiles to throw. So no matter how we get to that point, I still find the behaviour of those Englnd fans disgusting. I don't sit there wondering who or what provoked them because that's irrelevant to me.

Walk away. Turn the other cheek. Don't put yourself in that position.

It's a fair point, yet you didn't think you'd go and confront them like the fans ended up doing. Those fans are responsible for their actions.

Yes they are. Nothing's ever black and white though, is it?

England fans, sun, alcohol, French police, Marseille of all places. Recipe for disaster. I'd have stayed well clear until an hour before the game.

Oh ok. I always open with a flippant comment!

In this instance it was flippant and purposefully so. Whenever events like last night happen with England fans, there is always someone putting the mitigation up. As Archers says, it's not black and white, but your post did come across as "defending" what happened. I just get fed up with this happening with Englnd fans. There is no excuse for behaving or reacting that way. No matter how or what the relevant country/authority do, England fans end up kicking off. The police could have decided to create a cordon all the way round them, but that doesn't mean the fans should be launching bottles and chairs. Again.

Rooney at DM? I'd go with Walker ahead of Clyne, Rooney instead of Sterling and Wilshere in midfield.

Wilshere is too lightweigh, And we are playing with 6 attacks tonight as such, So Rooney would offer than Engine at getting back. Walker is absolutely crap, How podge still picks him is mind blowing.
