Ilive in Hadleigh now but I was in Glemsford for 25 years thats why I still play in the Crib leagues there. It was a bruising encounter last night but the Cock gave The Lion a good shafting, you cant keep a good Cock down.
I had my cock stoked by Clare back in the seventies, but this is probably the wrong place to discuss it.
I was born in Glemsford. In days of olde it was called “little Egypt” as, not only was it somewhat cut off being built on an arseing great hill, but was also a popular point for gypsies. Glemsfordians had a reputation for descending upon the surrounding lowlands like dark age Vikings crying “havoc” and letting loose the dogs of war. So a local “historian” told me, anyway.
JJ I love that sort of local history,we have a wealth of it in this area and don't make enough of it.
My Dad was born in Hadleigh and my Mum was from Sudbury. I love that part of the world especially around Polstead. Any one remember the story about the famous murder of Mariah Martin in the black barn at Polstead?
It was the Red Barn wasn't it?I remember seeing something about it on the telly not so long ago, either the One Show or a history programme. Was recently trawling local Oxfam shop for books and music and picked up a copy of Black Shuck,a poem about a legendary hound that supposedly haunted the eastern counties.
It was the Red Barn, (must have been a typo ), but yes, I'd heard of it. http://jerome23.wordpress.com/2013/...dy-the-red-barn-murder-polstead-suffolk-1828/
The Red Barn... Of course it was! My Dad told me the story when I was a little kid and it frightened the 5hit out of me!
