I went, the atmosphere was brilliant when Rooney scored, he gets a lot of stick for his England performances but there was plenty of love for him last night. It was dire first half, but at least the Rooney goal made it worth the trip. There were a hell of a lot of Swiss there, must have been about 5,000 and they were at the opposite end to normal for some reason. please log in to view this image
I was at England last night... England v Australia which was a great match, one of our best performances against the Aussies in a one day match, shame all I heard on the way home was news about Rooney bagging a pen against Switzerland in a meaningless game, hope Kane breaks his record one day
You wouldn't have got Sir Bobby buggering off to Vegas before a big tourney on the tabs and beers, I agree with a lot of Quills comments here also to put this in perspective Crouch also got a ****load of goals for England too so actually sticking them in the onion bag isn't always a true reflection of class or greatness, Rooney is a very good player not a great in my mind
I'd go for Lineker as Charlton was before my time, I'd vote for Sheringham and Beardsley ahead of Rooney too even if Beardsleys 'striker' definition is a bit sketchy, he was a wonderful clever player with a brilliant attitude at all times
Great ODI that. Roy, Taylor & Morgan were class. Thought we could've got a better total for our innings if the middle order (Stokes, Ali etc) had stuck around. Great catch by Finn. Roy's was lucky from the highlights- he completely lost it in the glare of the lights. Hopefully beat them at Headingley and tie the series for the final ODI.
That's a good example of why it's difficult to compare different eras. Back in Charlton's and Greaves's day there were fewer qualifiers and a lot more "friendlies" (which were generally anything but). Rooney has done a lot of good work in qualifiers, but his only successful finals tournament was Euro 2004, when he scored 4 of those 6 tournament goals. World Cups go a long way towards defining careers, which is why so many people favour Charlton (World Cup winner) and Lineker (Golden boot winner).
Sure, but the point I was trying to make is that a lot of the stick Rooney gets is unwarranted. He's been one of the all-time English Greats. Anyone who thinks otherwise must be a closet Liverpool fan.
You can't knock Rooners record but I wish he'd do something his Barnet. Shave the ****er off Wayne, those implants are making you look daft son. It actually looks like a toupee. Ridiculous.
I would have Rooney in my top 5 England attackers. Just because I think he needs to improve for England doesn't mean I can't think he has some ability, he clearly does, he's England's best player since Gazza. He just needs to show it when it matters (not qualifiers against teams like San Marino, Pol) in tournaments.
I'd put Scholes, Beckham and Cole ahead of him as England's best player since Gazza. Owen, Gerrard, Lampard and Terry on par as well. Personally I'd say Owen at his best was better than Rooney has ever been.
Roys catch was a miracle really, it went up to an incredible height so for him to get anywhere near it with the floodlights glaring was unbelievable, even though he fumbled it then caught it after it's the best catch I've seen for years. Finns was a beauty too
Good comment, I'd put Owen above Rooney too even if he deserves abuse for his horrific commentating nowadays
