Italy do enough, as Italy usually do. 2-1

We're in a much better position than Uruguay. I'll take that. We beat Costa Rica, Italy beat Uruguay, we're heavy favourites to progress.

If these young players continue to develop we could have a real shot at the Euros. Hugely impressed with Sterling. Not really disappointed, except... What does Rooney actually do?

I thought sterling was poor in the last 20m,maybe fatigue. Think it would have been better to save some pace on the bench.

I think England will only improve when they lose their dependence on Rooney.

Ok, so we just need to win the next 2. We can do it, positive signs tonight. Think Shearer hit the nail on the head there. Sterling excellent, and worked his socks off, Rooney failed to take the key chances second half, and we were defensively poor for their goals. A few tweaks and we would be a good side.

I've never seen anything in Rooney that suggests he is a world class player.

Maybe if Gerrard and Hodgson had spent less time tapping up our players and more time doing what they were supposed to be out there to do it might have been different.

Rooney will get to play his favourite position in the next two games. We'll put our pace out wide because Uruguay and Costa Rica are both weak at fullback. Not fair to judge Rooney when he's been made to play on the wings.

I agree to a certain extent. At his very best, which he is nowhere near, he is a World Class player, just. As a Premier League player, surrounded by the very best players, he's an excellent player. As a talisman England player his shortcomings are shown up in sharp relief.

At what point was he leading the line? For the last five minutes perhaps.

He's been good for pretty much every season he's had at United, don't be a tool. He wasn't good tonight but let's not pretend he's **** for United.
