  2. Why are we surprised?
Football authorities from FiFA downwards have failed to grasp the problem, not only of racism in general but Serbia in particular.
The Times today runs a list of comparative punishments for different transgressions and in all cases, fines and action against proven racism are a fraction of those for, say, approaching a ref or making a comment or the media.

The spoutings of a 2nd rate footballer from a home club should not be given any credibility when all the evidence points towards both crowd and Serbian players and officials being responsible for the events. The trouble is that this sort of smokescreen is all that UEFA will probably need to get out the broom and start dusting this under the nearest carpet.

Nice to see that Villas-Boas not only has a sensible attitude to this whole situation, but appears to have contacted Rose about it, as well as giving him his backing publicly:

“Obviously it is extremely difficult for Danny and he was disappointed by what happened, the situation he had to live with and the atmosphere that he had to be confronted with.
“I told Danny, and I tell you guys now, that I support him completely in this situation. He felt abused and this is obviously a serious matter which at the moment is in the hands of the FA in a certain way.
“The governing bodies have made quite a strong stance in England, which is fully appreciated, but hopefully Uefa can give us a little bit more of an indication about what they are expecting to do.
“We’ve spoken so much about this kind of situation that it’s almost like we haven’t put a brake into these events that we have to deal with on a weekly basis, which is very sad.
“At the moment I think it’s important to see actions instead of words. Our words on the recent events from the last year or so, or even more, probably haven’t been enough.
“I think the governing bodies have to act a little bit quicker and in a more aggressive way so we can in some way serve as an example in this massive sport, and hopefully equal the Olympics in a certain way.”

Precisely. These incidents should be treated far more seriously. It shouldn't just be down to waiting until certain suits can be bothered to all get together and discuss this like with the Lazio chanting. Prioritising matters like this urgently above anyother commitments they have should be part of their jobs and if it's not why the hell are these people getting paid a salary?
